Kitty learned how to remove collar :(

I bought rogz catz breakaway collars for the kitties and got them boomerang collar tags. Problem is that Jackson ( the black kitty in my avatar) has learned to get it off. He spins it around until the metal ring is in front and them bites it with his teeth all the while putting his paw through the collar and snap the breakaway comes open. I've tightened it to the middle ( it has 3 tightness settings for the breakaway) but we saw him get it off.

They are indoors but he sometimes door dashes ( both kitties were rescues and Jax was a parking lot kitten) and I have had to catch him on the deck before so I'd rather he have a collar I can trust.

There is always one who just doesn't cooperate or is too darn smart for his own good.  I finally had to stop putting collars on my Lucy because she would drop her chin under the collar and get it stuck in her mouth. Then we would all panic.  Fortunately, she isn't a door-dasher.

While I was trying to find a collar that worked, I did come across Beastie Bands which are stretchy instead of having the break-away plastic piece that Jackson has figured out.  There are lots of designs too.

I had heard about those beastie bands, but I wasn't sure how they could get out of it if they needed to. I'll check out the link. Thanks.

The collar is made of stretchy material.  I couldn't use them because Lucy would get her chin under it and get it stuck in her mouth.

I have had NO luck with collars and my cats. The elastic kind almost killed Presley. So don't hang tags on an elastic collar. Presley got his collar tag caught in the heat register and pulled the register out of the floor and ran off with the register twisting the collar like a tourniquet. Thank goodness I was home to save him. I have also tried the breakaway collars. Every one of my cat's pull them off rolleyes.gif I wish I could find a "safe" collar that the cat's can't pull off OR get them stuck in their mouths like a horse bit frown.gif. They are indoor only but I would like them to wear a collar just in case someone dashes out, like Walden. He is my door dasher. 3a.gif

Ok that is scary. Maybe I will give up on the collar idea? Jackson is pretty timid when outside anyway. When he has gotten out the door he just stays on the deck and slowly looks around and I just scoop him up and bring him back in.

Usually it's not that big of a deal if the cat is indoor only- unless they are nervous cats. Then they'll bolt for it as soon as they escape. Most indoor cats will just stand there outside not knowing exactly what to do.

Yep agree.gif is true biggrin.gif. Walden is my door dasher, and when he dashes out, he just freezes and waits till I run to snatch him up. It still worries me. I just cannot find any collars that my cat's will leave on. They ALL know how to pull off any breakaway collar I have tried xeye.gif.....

I've had to start locking the back door because it's got a lever type door knob and our German Shepherd knows how to open it. A few weeks ago my husband started yelling that the back door was open and the kitties got out. Luckily they both were just on the deck checking things out. And they don't run away when you try and catch them, but I still worry that something could happen. My daughter experimented today and put both kitties collars on and Jackson had his in his mouth and then popped it off within a few minutes. Cooper is still wearing his for now. His always ends up off too, just not as quickly.

My cats won't tolerate collars either. Micro chips are the way to go. Mine don't go outside, don't want to go outside, couldn't PAY them to go outside...but you never know what could happen. A  house break-in, a fire, any unforseeable thing could happen. (I'm a worry wart) My cats are chipped and that is the best I can do if they won't wear a collar safely.

Thanks for the reminder on micro chips. I looked into them before but I'm frustrated that there is not a universal chip.
