Its not looking good for this boy :(

The vet could find no injury with his back or legs, etc. They believe the problem to be neurological. He is back at the shelter for now. The vet recommended they test him for FIV/FeLV so I'm not sure if they think that might have something to do with it?

They said he doesn't appear to be in any pain, but he does have very limited mobility. If he tests positive, they will probably euthanize, since that would give him a double "strike" against him. If he is negative, he would need a very special home and someone willing to work with his limitations and not sure they feel that is possible. So he may be considered "unadoptable" either way.

I will know more when I check with them tomorrow afternoon. They have to keep him 7 days regardless, but I'm worried that may be all the time he has :bawling:

Please keep this special baby in your prayers. If he is negative, I'm hoping you can all help me think of a solution.

Still keeping up those

I wonder if it's an old injury that healed wrong...either way, here's hoping he tests positive and a special home can be found for him....maybe somewhere without stairs

At least he's not in pain. :vibes: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes: for no FIV/FeLV, and I hope that special home is found!

I wonder if there's any way to get the story of the rescuers in Joplin in the paper, with a highlight of this special kitty in need? I know I saw a story about a kitty being reunited with her family in a paper (online) recently.... let me see if I can find it and see who the reporter was.

Kitty is FIV/FeLV NEGATIVE! :clap::clap:

Now we've got to figure out what is wrong with him and what to do with him

I brought him home with me today since his stray hold was up at the shelter and they are very full and don't really have room for an "unadoptable" cat. I'm hoping to have him for just a week or so until we can find a longer term foster and then hopefully a forever home. I really don't know what to do next. Would like to get him looked at by someone other than the shelter vet who didn't actually do any kind of diagnostic tests and simply did a physical exam. None of us have the money for x-rays and detailed blood tests.

Its strange though, because when I put him in the bathroom and opened the crate, he DID stand up and walk. When he got to the lip of the crate his back legs did kind of drag out behind him, rather than lifting to step over it. He didn't seem to have trouble walking on the floor the few steps it took him to get to the food dish. He does not like his back end touched at all though so I can't really trust their opinion that he's "not in pain". I also noticed that he's very skinny (was wormed, etc. at the shelter so should be ok for that) and that sometimes his eyes move rapidly and repeatedly side to side. No idea on his age, just know that he is a neutered male.

Any ideas, advice, suggestions? Could he have been brain damaged in the tornado?

He's super scared and huddled behind the toilet right now, but I'm hoping he will loosen up a little in a day or two. Unfortunately, I don't have any Feliway or Rescue Remedy and can't get any anytime soon.

Oh Paula, you're such a love for bringing him home! :heart3: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes:

The rapid eye movement sounds like a kind of seizure to me. I'm thinking some type of neurological damage. I just have no experience with anything like this. Wish I'd read this before we took Laz in for chemo today, I'd have asked the vet about it. I also have no idea what the diagnostics would be - I assume it'd start with an x-ray of the spine. :dk:

I REALLY hope you're able to find a longer term foster for him, and I pray for a miracle in terms of finding someone able to afford the diagnostic work he needs. :heart3: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes:

Thanks Laurie

I just feel so bad for this boy. He's so terrified. He will be picked up Sunday evening to go to a foster home in Tulsa. She's going to try to get him in to her vet on Monday or Tuesday. The plan is to start with an exam and blood panel and x-ray if possible. Don't know how old he is, so he could be having some senior kitty issues as well. We're trying to get some funds together to cover the costs.

She is prepared to foster him for quite a while so I'm hoping he can be in one place long enough to be comfortable enough to come out of hiding. He has been through so much in the last 6 months.

I lay down on the floor and talked to him a while and got him to come out of hiding for a few minutes!

He was purring like a little motorboat SO loud and rubbing all over my hand for loving :) When he was doing that, he was turning circles and purring and his back legs were working just fine but they stretched out behind him again when he was reaching for the food. Its really strange.

I'm wondering if poor nutrition could have any effects on this too? When he stands up you can see how truly big he is. Very tall, long legs, just a big boy, but you can feel every bone in his spine and hips because he is so skinny.

Will keep you all posted :)

p.s. We did get one kitty reunited on Wednesday night. A precious little blue female named Charlie that we had been seeing off and on since July. Her family looked for her for months and had finally given her up for dead since they never saw any sign of her. Such a sweet kitty and so happy to be found.

I've been checking this thread for updates, and I'm glad to hear that there's someone out there who can give this cat a chance. Who knows, with good care his condition may improve.  Please do keep us posted!

Little update and of course some pictures :)

I let him out into the bedroom this evening so he can get some exercise and attention. He is SUPER affectionate and such a little purr-monster. He seems to be walking fine and have seen him do several full-body stretches, stretching first his front legs, then his back. It doesn't seem to bother him and he doesn't appear sensitive to touch in those areas. Still some possible neurological problem since his eyes twitch like that but I have seen a big improvement just in the 2 days I've had him.

He is SO skinny though. Bones are very prominent. I truly wonder if malnutrition and fear were contributing to his issues? He truly looked nearly starved when he was first brought in. I wonder if part of his problem was weakness from that?

He's still very scared but if I sit or lay down on the floor he comes over purring and rubbing all over and rolling on the floor, headbutting anything he thinks will pet him :lol3:

Here are a few pictures of this gorgeous boy (who goes to his foster home tomorrow evening. Good thing too, because I'm already so much in love with him. I don't think I could have him much longer and not want to keep him!)

He was actually trying to bat at a toy in this one, major milestone!
