At least he's not in pain. agree.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gif for no FIV/FeLV, and I hope that special home is found!

I wonder if there's any way to get the story of the rescuers in Joplin in the paper, with a highlight of this special kitty in need? I know I saw a story about a kitty being reunited with her family in a paper (online) recently.... let me see if I can find it and see who the reporter was.

Kitty is FIV/FeLV NEGATIVE! clap.gifclap.gif

Now we've got to figure out what is wrong with him and what to do with him confused.gif

I brought him home with me today since his stray hold was up at the shelter and they are very full and don't really have room for an "unadoptable" cat. I'm hoping to have him for just a week or so until we can find a longer term foster and then hopefully a forever home. I really don't know what to do next. Would like to get him looked at by someone other than the shelter vet who didn't actually do any kind of diagnostic tests and simply did a physical exam. None of us have the money for x-rays and detailed blood tests.

Its strange though, because when I put him in the bathroom and opened the crate, he DID stand up and walk. When he got to the lip of the crate his back legs did kind of drag out behind him, rather than lifting to step over it. He didn't seem to have trouble walking on the floor the few steps it took him to get to the food dish. He does not like his back end touched at all though so I can't really trust their opinion that he's "not in pain". I also noticed that he's very skinny (was wormed, etc. at the shelter so should be ok for that) and that sometimes his eyes move rapidly and repeatedly side to side. No idea on his age, just know that he is a neutered male.

Any ideas, advice, suggestions? Could he have been brain damaged in the tornado?

He's super scared and huddled behind the toilet right now, but I'm hoping he will loosen up a little in a day or two. Unfortunately, I don't have any Feliway or Rescue Remedy and can't get any anytime soon.

Oh Paula, you're such a love for bringing him home! heartpump.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gif

The rapid eye movement sounds like a kind of seizure to me. I'm thinking some type of neurological damage. I just have no experience with anything like this. Wish I'd read this before we took Laz in for chemo today, I'd have asked the vet about it. I also have no idea what the diagnostics would be - I assume it'd start with an x-ray of the spine. dontknow.gif

I REALLY hope you're able to find a longer term foster for him, and I pray for a miracle in terms of finding someone able to afford the diagnostic work he needs. heartpump.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gif

Thanks Laurie

I just feel so bad for this boy. He's so terrified. He will be picked up Sunday evening to go to a foster home in Tulsa. She's going to try to get him in to her vet on Monday or Tuesday. The plan is to start with an exam and blood panel and x-ray if possible. Don't know how old he is, so he could be having some senior kitty issues as well. We're trying to get some funds together to cover the costs.

She is prepared to foster him for quite a while so I'm hoping he can be in one place long enough to be comfortable enough to come out of hiding. He has been through so much in the last 6 months.

I lay down on the floor and talked to him a while and got him to come out of hiding for a few minutes! clap.gif

He was purring like a little motorboat SO loud and rubbing all over my hand for loving smile.gif When he was doing that, he was turning circles and purring and his back legs were working just fine but they stretched out behind him again when he was reaching for the food. Its really strange.

I'm wondering if poor nutrition could have any effects on this too? When he stands up you can see how truly big he is. Very tall, long legs, just a big boy, but you can feel every bone in his spine and hips because he is so skinny.

Will keep you all posted smile.gif

p.s. We did get one kitty reunited on Wednesday night. A precious little blue female named Charlie that we had been seeing off and on since July. Her family looked for her for months and had finally given her up for dead since they never saw any sign of her. Such a sweet kitty and so happy to be found.

I've been checking this thread for updates, and I'm glad to hear that there's someone out there who can give this cat a chance. Who knows, with good care his condition may improve.  Please do keep us posted! heartpump.gif

Little update and of course some pictures smile.gif

I let him out into the bedroom this evening so he can get some exercise and attention. He is SUPER affectionate and such a little purr-monster. He seems to be walking fine and have seen him do several full-body stretches, stretching first his front legs, then his back. It doesn't seem to bother him and he doesn't appear sensitive to touch in those areas. Still some possible neurological problem since his eyes twitch like that but I have seen a big improvement just in the 2 days I've had him.

He is SO skinny though. Bones are very prominent. I truly wonder if malnutrition and fear were contributing to his issues? He truly looked nearly starved when he was first brought in. I wonder if part of his problem was weakness from that?

He's still very scared but if I sit or lay down on the floor he comes over purring and rubbing all over and rolling on the floor, headbutting anything he thinks will pet him laughing02.gif

Here are a few pictures of this gorgeous boy (who goes to his foster home tomorrow evening. Good thing too, because I'm already so much in love with him. I don't think I could have him much longer and not want to keep him!)

I'm so behind reading threads, I just saw this! Good on you for saving him.

Do you remember at all when I brought my Eden (Siamese) home? She had balance issues, trouble walking straight, back leg/mobility problems. She was pregnant, starved, and dehydrated. The vet thinks it was improper care (specifically lack of food/water) that caused her issues. She has no mobility or balance problems anymore. The only lasting thing was very infrequent seizures (I haven't seen one in over a year). Obviously doesn't sound like the exact same case with this handsome boy.....but there is hope.

I unfortunately don't have the videos of her moving anymore. frown.gif

I wondered the same thing. I really hope that once he's been on a steady diet for a while, he'll recover, as white cat lover's Eden did.

Thanks for the pics!

Kitty's new foster mom took him to the vet today and here is her various posts about him:

Update on this guy. Took him to the vet today. He has a head injury but because he's getting around so well and eating and drinking that it is a good sign. He has hemorrhaging in his right eye. So he needs to take steroids to ensure his brain doesn't swell and an anti-biotic as a precaution. He has a follow-up on Monday.

He's been doing really good. He's walking normally most of the time. He crouches low to the ground when he's scared. His eyes go rapidly side to side because he's dizzy. So that's why he was walking the way he was.originally. A mixture of being scared and being dizzy.

I have and update on this little guy. She did bloodwork and found no problems. He does has a head injury though. She said his right eye has hemorrhaging. But she said that because he is getting around well, it's a good sign. She gave me a steroid to give him and an anti-biotic just "to make her feel better" just in case it's some virus in the brain. She thinks he's about 4 years old. He has a follow-up next week.

So that's the news on kitty. Will hopefully find out more in the next week. Please please keep him in your prayers vibes.gif

Kitty (who has been named Taz) is still doing good. I will get the chance to find out for myself tomorrow rolleyes.gif

Sharon's father-in-law passed away and she has to travel to Chicago for the funeral, etc. and will be gone for one week. She has nobody who can come in each day to feed him and give him his meds, so rather than put him through the stress of a 12-14 hour car trip and staying in yet another strange place, have decided to keep him here for the week. She will be bringing him tomorrow evening. I hope he will settle a little easier here since it will hopefully still smell and seem familiar to him?

He has been doing well at her house, sleeping on her bed, has met and seems to be getting on well with her Dachshund doggie, ventures out of the bedroom without prompting, and even meowed for the first time today smile.gif I hope this change won't set him back in his progress but it seems the best solution under the circumstance. I can't say I'm unhappy about seeing him again either wink.gif

I love his name! I hope Taz will continue to do well. I'm glad you're taking over while she goes to the funeral....it is so much easier on him. Bless you for all you've done for Taz.

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear about her father. rbheart.gifhugs.gifhugs.gifhugs.gif

But I'm glad to hear there's been good news for Taz! Just mega vibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gif that this head injury will heal, in the sense that the poor fella won't be dizzy, and if it's the result of a bacteria or swelling, that the antibiotics and pred will resolve that for this beautiful boy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm sure he'll remember your home, and I agree, it's the best option for him. heartpump.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gif

What a feel good ending this has been. Following this thread was a nail biter but I am tickled pink Taz had you to bring him to life and love. You have a wonderful heart.
