Question of the Day Nov 9, 2011

Thread Starter

Do you work overtime when it is offered at your job? How do you feel about mandatory overtime?

Where I work, we are required to do at least 5 hours per week overtime since we are being slammed. We have a new system and it takes longer. I also do at least 5 hours on Saturday for processing.

working in a restaurant, someone is always calling in sick, so I work whenever I'm needed. We don't have mandatory overtime.

All depends on my mood or my plans if I work OT.. but I will occassionally, but its not mandatory..

My BF on the other hand has mandatory overtime. (Pretty much, they work until the work is done each tonight)

When I worked in the paper plant, I refused any OT. The only time I worked it is when I got stuck, which wasn't often as other employees were willing to take it for the money. I hated OT. Seven days, swing-shift, one weekend off a month and only two holidays off a year. OT on top of that? No way....not for any amount of money.

In my current job, I have meetings which I have to attend. I do get comp time for the time spent in meetings.

I don't work outside the home anymore, so I'm always working overtime laughing02.gif

When I was an aide in a nursing home, I'd be asked to work overtime occasionally.  I did when asked and believe me, that makes for a very long day.  I never received over-time pay, tho, and I finally started making excuses as to why I couldn't work that second shift.

My job was working as a horse trainer so my hours were all mixed up anyway laughing02.gif Somedays I worked longer and other's not so much. But I don't think I would like mandatory over-time .... and with this economy, I am surprised to hear that some companies even have mandatory overtime. I guess that is good news if you want to make some extra cash agree.gif

Back when I had a job; they were always the "stay until the job is done" kind.  I never got actual overtime pay.  One job was basically salary or they would give you comp time.  But that rarely happened for me.  When I worked for the doctors it was hourly so some weeks I might get a bigger paycheck; but there was no increase in how much per hour I got.

DH works overtime almost every day.  He works for a bigger company, has a union, etc.  It's nice.  It's helping us afford the extra car payment we have until January.  There are plenty of days lately I wish he was home earlier; but being a single income family, I appreciate his working so much and so hard without complaint.  Makes it harder for me to complain too.

Unemployed since January, otherwise, as quoted below.

Sometimes when my work is really busy they have mandatory overtime .. but only on Monday's and it's only 30 minutes extra thats mandatory, so it's not a big deal. I used to never volunteer for OT, but now I'm trying to save for Christmas and for a few trips next year, so I'll be taking on a lot for a while!

I am on salary, so I don't get overtime unless the company is making 110% of their projected budget for the week. If we aren't, but need to work longer, we basically work for free. When we get "overtime" on salary, it's called "flywheel", and we must work 45 hours first before getting flywheel, which is your hourly rate, no time and a half.

We did have mandatory over time not too long ago, minimum working 6 days a week. We're slammed right now too, but luckily I work quickly enough and manage well enough that I don't have to worry about putting in overtime. Really makes me miss being paid time and a half for it though - would love to be working OT now!
