Antibiotic shot for scabby flea bites?

I bought my cat to the vet as he was slowly getting small patches of hair loss and scabs. I saw no evidence of fleas on him or in the house so I got concerned. Turns out he has flea dirt, but no actual live fleas. He is super sensitive to flea bites and he scratches so bad he actually takes off some fur and creates large scabs. Our other cat if she has fleas you dont even know it, which is shocking from how the other cat reacts.

So anyway the vet gave him a 2 week lasting shot of antibiotic with a cortisone shot, and we are getting him Frontline this week and washed all his bedding.

I know he had some scabs, but was a 2 week dose of antibiotics really neccesary? This never happened before so I let the vet give him the antibiotics, but now I question if I should have.

The antibiotics were probably to prevent a secondary infection from the scabs and bites as he heals. I would give them to him as prescribed. You dont want a worse problem on your hands that you would have to deal with if you decide to withold them. Just my 2 cents.  :)

He got the antibiotics I just wanted to know the reason for it. You explained it, thank you!
