My new cat Marcel has one eye that has some fluid leaking out and it gets quite crusty (enough to have to clean off the crusty eye boogers daily).  He also squints a bit with that eye.

He has a vet appointment on Friday just for a general check-up and to meet my vet so she knows him in case he gets sick, but I was just wondering if there's anything I can do for him in the meantime/ if it's something to be concerned about?

TIA!

If the fluid is clear, it's okay, but if it's yellow or green, then that's something to be concerned about.  He may be having some reaction to dust or changing of seasons.

The fluid is clear and the "eye boogers" are dark brown.

It's probably just an allergic reaction to airborne allergens or dust then.  When my little boy kitty starts with that, I just give him some lysine for a few days and it clears up.  You can get L-Lysine tablets in the supplement section of Wal-Mart, Target, the drug store, or a health food store.  Just crush the tablet between two spoons and mix into some canned food or meat baby food (no onions or garlic).  You can start with 500mg a day (250mg twice a day) and see how that works.

Thanks for this thread! Esme is starting to have a similar issue, except she has clear fluid (like tears) coming out of both eyes, one more so than the other. This is our first winter with her, so I'm hoping that's it. :)

I took Marcel to the vet today for a general check-up and upon close inspection it turns out he has a little cloudy area at the top of his iris that seems to be causing the irritation.  He has some prescription ointment and may need to see an opthomologist (or however that's spelled) if it doesn't clear up with the medication... so just a reminder that it's always good to have a vet take a look if something seems amiss!

I hope Marcel clears up! Keep us updated for sure. So.. they have pet opthamologists? Interesting! :vibes:

I called the vet today for Esme and they said as long as it is clear then she should be fine. They said to just use some eye wash on her though. I stopped @ PetSmart and grabbed some Nutri Vet eye wash for kitties and we used some on her tonight and she is already looking better! To make it even better, it sells for $5.99 and rang up for only $1.47. :)
