Cat Puking

I have a 2 year old male cat that I just adopted from a breeder.  We have had him for about 2 weeks.  He is a very calm cat and took to our home in a day or two.  I took him to a vet for a check up, and he was given 2 vaccines...rabies and FVRCP (?).  A day later..he vomited 3 times...was ok for a couple of days...and then today..vomitted again.  He is vomitting cat food....no blood in the vomit.  He appears to be fine...not lethargic or in pain.  He seems to be his normal self.  Should I be concerned?  He is on a cat food that the breeder had him on.  He is fed 3/8 C twice a day.

It's possible that he's just eating too fast.

Breaking his total amount of food up and feed it in well spaced out meals 4 meals is best but however many are convenient for you.

Raising his food dish to about the height of his chest will help slow him down too.

It's also possible that some ingredient in the food just doesn't agree with him.

What food are you feeding, and is it dry or canned?

Hi Arlyn.  Thanks for the suggestions.  It does seem like he wolfs it down sometimes.  I will try raising it up.  He is being fed Organix dry food.  He seems to prefer dry over wet.  I was thinking of maybe switching his food???

Organix, if I recall is a fairly decent food.

If he is otherwise fine on it, I wouldn't switch.

Try my suggestions first and see if they help. :)

Are you feeding the same thing he was getting before you adopted him?  It could be that if you're feeding something different it's upsetting his tummy.

She said it is the same food. He may be eating it just to calm himself as part of his adjustment to his new home. I would call the vet and ask if it is normal for your cat to vomit after his vaccinations the way he did.

Vomiting in normal situations comes from overeating, overgrooming. Maybe watch him carefully so you can better see what the heck he is doing. Also call the breeder, it would help to know more about what times he was fed and how much, maybe a little more info about his overall routine so you can match that to the breeder. And ask them if he was a chow-hound too.

In any new situation cats shed a lot more just from stress, so it could be he has a lot of fur to lick up. If he likes brushing, then it might be a good idea to brush him a lot and help him with the grooming. Even if he is not throwing up hairballs, these could be getting in the way of his food a little bit. If all else seems normal, get some laxatone from the pet store, dab it on his paw if he doesn't like to eat it off your finger, he will lick it off his paw just to keep clean :-).
