Visiting cat, should I let him explore?

My roommate's girlfriend's cat is staying with us for about a week. My younger cat does not like newcomers and hisses/growls whenever he sees the other cat. However, the visiting cat couldn't care less, and he is perfectly happy wandering around the apartment and exploring a couple times a day. He spends most of the day under my roommate's bed, and we leave the door closed when he is unde there. My question is, will any harm be done by me letting this other cat wander around when I am only a couple rooms away at most? I don't want to upset my cats too much, but they seem to not even notice there is another cat in the apartment unless the visiting cat is out of the room actively exploring.

Seems to be that the old addage "if it ain't broke don't fix it" would apply.

The hissing and growling is bound to happen, but as long as there is no physical harm i.e biting, clawing, etc - then your babies are just establishing it is their house and the newbie is merely a guest.

A week isn't too long, and unfortunately it generally takes most cats longer than a week to get used to a new one in the house. I know smokie took a couple of MONTHS to get used to bandit.
