new kitty, senior cat disgruntled (sometimes)

Hey guys,

My wife and I just got a male-neutered kitty approx 2 months ago. Prior to that, we had female-spayed 2 year old Bombay. We did the slow introduction and allowed the kitty to have it's own environment at first. During introductions the Bombay would just beat the crap outa the kitty, but after a while the Bombay took a liking to the kitty and everything seemed to be okay.

Since that initial liking, the female has been acting weird. She doesn't want to be held anymore and cries out in disgust whenever we pick her up. Her aggression has raised and she seems to be annoyed by the kitty more than anything. It's a drastic change from the "hey this new kitty is kinda cool" attitude she had earlier. This all makes sense to me, considering the fact that she's probably jealous about the new introduction to our family.

There's just one thing that's confusing. She continues to kneed on a regular basis. I'm under the impression that kneeding is a sign of happiness, one of the best signs that an owner can see, but she does this literally 15 seconds after giving out a witch cry and running away from the kitty. Her overall attitude change is concerned, but I'm more confused by anything about the sudden change from being pissed off to kneeding. Anyone have any thoughts?

It sounds like your older one is stressed.  I suspect the kneading behavior is one that she uses to calm herself down.

Has the older one been to the vet recently?  We have an older cat who has not been adjusting to our kittens.  She became unusually grumpy over the last week and when we took her to the vet, she had an infected anal gland which was causing her a lot of pain.

After making sure she is ok health-wise, try some Feliway diffusers or Bach's Flower remedy to calm her down.  Also, maybe give her some time alone by shutting the kitten up in a room.
