I think I just answered my own question on Smileys. Found the Smiley icon --- is that the right way to do it?

How do I change it so that I can type :nod: instead of clicking?
Go to "Preferences" at the top or bottom of the page, then set the "Preferred Editor Type" in the drop-down window to BB Code Editor.

That's true, but you can always switch back to the Rich Text editor right from the page if you're planning on posting a picture, using the dropdown color chart, etc.. Just make sure you switch before you post. If you switch mid-post, whatever you've already typed is lost.
