I've noticed Picasso is always eating from her dry food bowl. I put in a little more than a cup of food a day, t I always see her munching from the bowl. If its empty, I don't refill until the next day. It's a mix of Kirkland brand and Buffalo Blue Wilderness. She's also on a can of wet (soulistic and trader joes) a day (half morning, half evening)

She's about 7-8 months or so.

When's a good time to take away free-feeding for her? I don't want her to continue the habit when she gets older. Monet never eats as much as her (probably because he can't get to the bowl with her face in it all the time!)

Hah!  I've got the same question too.  Hopefully someone's got the answer.  My Annie is starting to get a bit tubby from just constantly munching on her dry between her wet meals...

I stopped free feeding when Tumbles was young as he joined a house of piggies!  I couldn't ever leave food out, but I did offer him food about every 3-4 hrs.  When he as about 6-7 mos old, he went to the same schedule of feeding that the other kitties were on, so I think now's a good time for you to stop free feeding.

When they show signs they are getting overweight, as its not like they get fat overnight so if you feel their bodies regularly you should be able to tell nice and gradually.   Some cats are not very food motivated, and self regulate well.   Most are piggies though IMO, and Wesley and Buttercup stopped at 8 months as I figured their growth rate had slowed quite a bit.

I agree, she is probably at the time to stop free feeding.

Gotta start watching Harvey too... but both of mine are good regulators so far. Crumb isn't heavy, and we leave the BG Chicken out all the time. They also both never eat their entire servings of wet... Crumb always eats a few bites, then drags any object he can find nearby over to the bowl and covers it up for later.

There is no "right" time to stop free feeding, IMHO. I would say, if/when the cat starts to gain too much weight is a good time. Some cats are VERY food motivated, some are not. But in general eight months to a year old is the "correct" time. More likely, the age that it might be necessary.
