Just a quick update, I finally got her to eat the a/d last night, on her own. Obviously the Sheba is helping her appetite, then I re-introduced the a/d. She is full of beans this morning. So much so she has had me up twice during the night for food x

That is really good news. I have answered your PM about the pilling - Hope you manage to get her to take it.

I'm guessing you really don't mind having to get up twice to feed her, since that means she's getting better!
I'm so happy for you both!

She had more energy then me today
but I won't complain. Ive realised she will only eat the a/d when I catch her asleep, the element of suprise. She thinks its the other food, and eats it. Then realises!!! As long as she is getting some is better then none. But she is loving the Sheba xxx

We have to go back to the vets tomorrow as she is now constipated, but still wants to eat. Which I'm a bit reluctant about, as it might make her feel worse. There is no winning at the moment!!! x

Let her eat. :) If she wants to eat, she can't be all that blocked up yet. What signs is she giving that you think she's constipated?

Since she went for quite a long period eating very little, she may not have all that much waste in her bowels to move yet. The vet is a good idea, but don't withhold food!.

:yeah:

First of all, I'm glad to hear she's doing so well!

I agree with otto. Are you thinking she's constipated just because she hasn't had a bowel movement in a while? Or is she in the box, straining to go?

When you're at the vet, ask about canned pumpkin (plain pumpkin). I don't know if it's something familiar to vets there, but it is a good source of fiber for cats, most like it enough to eat it (especially if mixed with food), and it helps regulate water in the colon, so it helps either constipation or diarrhea. IF her colon is full (and the vet will be able to tell), the pumpkin would help if it's just constipation. You just need to give a tablespoon or two a day, and it's quite safe.

Thank you for the replies. She hasn't had a movement since Saturday I think, maybe Friday. She keeps going to her litter tray, having a good scratch about and then nothing. She is peeing though. She seems restless too. She is at the vets at 10am. Also her appetite seems to have come back strongly which I am hoping is a very good sign. I very much doubt I will be able to get the pumpkin from the vet. So could I use shop bought? Or if not make it myself? Many thanks as always for your replies xxxxx

Absolutely you can buy pumpkin at the supermarket - (shop) - just make sure that is is 100% pure, unsweetened pumpkin. Usually, here in the US, they sell canned on the bakery isle, by the pie crusts.... My vet recommends 1 TBSP per day (soup spoon?), divided in 2 meals - 1/2 in one meal, 1/2 in another. I know a lot of people here recommends 1 tea spoon, but per my vet, that is really not quite enough for constipation.....
Also, I will agree with the fromage... I will bet that is way better for a kitty who has a history with cystitis than tuna/fish.... Now the important thing is for her to eat, but fish food is the very first thing to cut on the road to prevent urinary tract trouble....
I am not sure if you have access to cat bags in there - this is what I am talking about: This is what I use to medicate all my cats (I medicate my cat Bugsy daily), for force feeding, and it has been a complete life saver - has completely saved my relationship with Bugsy. He was totally afraid of me, as you can imagine, as there were times I would have to medicate him 2x and even 3x a day (his medication is for life).... After this bag things have changed..... There is no more stress..... It is him and me and no stress during medication time.
When my Lucky had a blockage and I had to force feed her (A/D), that is what I used too - she had NEVER eaten wet food before, and she did just fine with 5-6 feedings a day, for 4 entire days. If I can recommend a product for every cat owner to have at home for emergencies, this bag and a good set of syringes is it.

Good luck with your kitty, hope all gets better soon!! :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:

Canned unsweetened pumpkin is hard to get here - but you can buy fresh in any market. Just boil the flesh till soft and puree it, either in a blender or a mouli mill. No salt or sugar. I agree that probably she will go eventually of her own accore - her digestive tract will take a few days to get back to normal, but pumpkin won't hurt and may help. Good luck.

Well it seemed we took a step forward for her to take 5 back. A very stressful vets trip. She was sick in the car, which is normal for her. But at the vets, the vet gave her the huge antibiotic, which she fought against. We came home and within an hour she was sick again. To me it looked like the dissolved yellow antibiotic. The vet gave me a paste to give her for the constipation, its like toothpaste, and she will not entertain that, so she is still constipated. The vet said I could get a special baby constipation treatment from the chemist. I asked about it at the chemist and he said it was administered rectally!!!! I don't know what I'm doing with that kind of thing. And she has gone off her food again. I rang the vet and she said shes had a stressful day and she should be fine tomorrow!!!! As I only got an hrs sleep last night, me and Rusty did snuggle on the beg and had a nap for a few hrs. But on the brighter side, her Jaundice is alot better, no signs of it in her mouth, but a little in the ears. I was so hopeful this morning, she was full of energy, ate a whole can of Sheba. Now she doesn't want anything. I tried a little tuna oil on her lips before and and she wretched as if she wanted to be sick. I am so tired, and my 2 other cats are feeling well and truly unloved.

Why is the vet giving her antibiotics? I haven't had a chance to read every post - does your kitty have a diagnosed infection? Antibiotics can have a negative impact on a cat's appetite so I personally wouldn't be giving them to an inappetant cat unless there's a clear reason to do so.

Fingers crossed that your girl starts eating again! Does she have any favourite treats, like Temptations or Pounce, maybe some Whiskas Cat Milk or CatSip? Whatever it takes to keep her eating. Ditch the A/D if she doesn't like it, there's nothing magical about it. It's not actually higher in calories or nutrients than most other foods - the reason vets prescribe it for anorexia is because it's supposed to be highly palatable and easy to digest. If the kitty doesn't like it in the first place, that defeats the purpose.

Good luck!

Every time my Sven takes an antibiotic, he get nauseated, then goes off his food, so I don't think it's uncommon that now she doesn't want to eat.  Once she does seen hungry again, try mixing a little bit of the "toothpaste stuff" the Vet gave you in with her Sheba.

My Sven also has a chronic constipation issue and will not voluntarily eat that stuff in the tube, and even if we put it on his paw, instead of licking it off, he flings it all over the place.  (sometimes they just don't know what's good for them).  He also refuses to eat pumpkin.  What we give him is generic Miralax, 1/4 teaspoon mixed in a teaspoon of water, then mixed into his wet food, twice a day.  Works like a charm, although it takes a day or two.  The good thing about it is that it has no taste.  Here in the states, you can find it at the grocery store, Target, Walmart, or any drug store.

Just a quick update. Rusty has had movement, thank god. But after the stress of yesterday she has lost her appetite again. Only eating a little at a time. I did manage to get her to eat a few treats which were laced with her antibiotics. Just her other tablet to give her now!! I think the trip to the vets yesterday really stressed her out, the poor thing. Thank you again for your replies xxxxxxxxx

I'm so glad Rusty has had a bowel movement! :banana1: Her appetite may improve now.

Enemas should never given to a cat unless you have been trained to to it by the vet, so your instincts are right on that.

continued vibes for your dear little girl

:vibes::vibes: :vibes: Rusty :heart3:

Normal or not, feed him 24x7, and feel blessed about it - for HL, food is the best medicine.... this is truly a blessing :heart3: You can't ask for more! :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes: Poor thing must be hungry..... Depending on what you are feeding too, the nutrients might not be there, so it might be just normal - you just might been used to him eating so little, it's a shock, now that his appetite is back!
How much is he eating in total, and what are you feeding him now? :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:

She wont eat the a/d again. But she is eating Tuna Sheba, roughly about 4-5 80g tins a day. plus any treats she will eat which have her tablets hidden in them. What I find strange is, she has never cried for her food, until now. x

Sheba is 2oz (at least here in the US).... and 4 tins/domes a day is a normal qty, not too much..... so he is not eating too much IMHO.
What concerns me, is that he does have a history of Urinary tract infection, if I am not mistaken, doesn't he? I remember reading this somewhere.... And fish is highly highly addictive..... Your first priority, is, no doubt, for him to eat - so that's excellent news!:clap::clap::clap::clap:
But if I were you, I would start introducing him to other flavors now - because you want to take him off the fish for urinary health, and curb his tuna addiction. If knock on wood he stops eating, you will have an incredibly hard time having him eat anything but Sheba.
Also, be aware that MARS does not produce Sheba anymore, you can also fall trap into an out of stock situation........ that can be a big problem...... :wavey:
