We got/rescued our oldest cat, Sammy, in July. He is a 12 to 13 year old neutered long-haired cat. The people who had him before us had 6 other cats, and Sammy was the oldest and was very neglected. The other cats would push him off the chair where he would be sleeping, he was so skinny when we got him. We went to the vet a couple days after, & the vet weighed him at only 6pounds and 3ounces. She told us to sprinkle in Cosequin in his food, and to generally watch him for anything unusual. Within the first month, we saw no change in him, & he seemed to be just sitting in the litter box, not doing anything. Nothing seemed too abnormal except for the fact that he would just drink water like crazy and then pee 5-6 times a day! We took him to the vet for blood in his stool, and the vet just said that he had a bladder infection, told us to use some cranberry tablets and put it in his food. She also recommended wet food, so we began giving him half a cup every morning.

In early August, somebody put a stray 2-month old kitten in our newspaper box. We took her into the garage, made her a bed and set up a litterbox and food, since we weren't sure if she had anything that she would give to Sammy, or vice versa. Sammy was starting to get worse though, he would throw up every night, and poop outside the litterbox in our laundry room. We had to put him outside in the garage, with our new kitten. At first they didn't get along, but by day three they would cuddle together and purr. Near the ending of September, maybe a little under a month that they were out there, they were both allowed inside. The kitten, now named Poe, had her shots, & was tested for any serious issues. We took Sammy to the vet, AGAIN, to see why he was pooping outside of the box, when he would religiously go to the bathroom, inside the box nearly every hour on the hour. The vet didn't seem to understand why he was doing this, either. They tested his kidneys, but everything was negative and on the high end of normal. At this point, maybe the middle of September, he still didn't weigh very much more, now 6pounds and 7ounces. Him and Poe had separate dishes, they both had a generous amount of food available to them at all times. In no means were we ever depriving him of food.

Let me clarify that when he went outside of the box, he never went pee outside. He was always very good about that before. Ending of September, though, he was limping terribly, he would gag without anything ever coming out, he was sleeping a lot at hours at a time. He avoided all contact with humans and Poe. Sammy never played much because of his age, and he is just naturally calm, but when Poe would try, now, he would hiss and bite at her. He never did that before... One night he was in the kitchen, ran over to where the trash can is in the kitchen by the back door, and just started peeing blood everywhere. My mom came in and was terrified, so she decided to call the vet. It was about 8 o'clock at nighttime, so she was re-directed to an emergency line. At this time, Sammy would go downstairs to the two litterboxes we had, and just sit in them, without doing anything at all. He would move from one litterbox in the laundry room, and then one in our unfinished part of the basement. This is what made me the saddest, to see my first cat in so much pain. :( We went to the emergency pet hospital, and they checked his vitals and whatnot. They said he was healthy, but very skinny, on the outside. They decided to check his bladder though, to see if there was any stones in there. When it came back, they told us that he was fine, but his bladder was smaller than a usual cat. He stopped peeing blood, and when we got home he seemed completely normal.

The very beginning of August, my sleep schedule was messed up, so I was in the living room watching tv, and him and Poe were cuddled on the chair next to me, when Sammy just wakes up and starts seizing. He was shaking so bad that he fell off the chair, and ran downstairs. The thing about Sammy is, though, that he never runs. He just walks quickly, or normally. But he ran away, thumping down the stairs.

All he ever does now is sleep and cry. I don't know what to do, two different vets are telling me that there's nothing wrong with him, but a cat does not seize, pee blood, and cry for no reason. Can somebody please give me some kind of advice? :(

The only thing I can suggest is to find another vet, maybe one that specializes in cats.

I hope someone else has better answers for you...

Oh my goodness.......you need a new vet.

I wouldn't stop until I got a diagnosis.  Like you said, a cat does not pee blood and seize for the fun of it.

Please, today, get him to a knowledgeable vet.

Did he ever have any blood work done?

Definitely need a new vet!  Your vet has given you no guidance whatsoever!

Sounds like he's got some kind of renal problems going on.  He needs a senior blood work panel, a urinalysis, and possibly some fluids to help him.  He may have a urinary tract infection (indicated by peeing outside the box).

Keep us posted!  Hope your guy feels better.

I would get copies of any test results and find a regular vet (not an emergency vet) for a second opinion.  Was a urinalysis ever done?  How about an ultrasound of the bladder?

I'm almost positive that he didn't get any extensive bloodwork done, but if he did, it was only to check for heartworm. He never had a urinalysis done, but I do think that he had a bladder ultrasound at the emergency vets, they didn't find anything wrong with him. He's starting to pee blood on the walls now, and he won't let anyone touch him. I would take him to another vet in a heartbeat, I just don't know where to even start looking for new places. Our vet now is literally three minutes down the road and everyone else that I've talked to has never had issues with her....

Thank you all for your support.

You can take him to your regular vet and ask for bloodwork. A full panel. And a full urinalysis. Sometimes vets won't suggest this because it's expensive and they think people won't go for it, but it's really the only way to find out what's wrong. If your regular vet is still not helpful after you explain everything that's wrong with him and what you want to do about it, then it's time to find a new vet. Just grab the Yellow Pages, turn to "Veterinarians", and start calling. Tell them what's wrong with your cat and what they think should be done. When you find one that sounds helpful, give them a try.

I hope you find help for your kitty soon. It sounds like he feels really bad :(.

I must be blunt....your cat could die soon.  Today, you need to get him help today.  Broaden your search.  Ask people at work who they take their animals to.  But please, today.  You are looking at the weekend now and there is sporadic help then.

You just can't say you don't know where to start looking.  Go online, the resourses are enourmous.  He needs the bloodwork mentioned.  But please, go today. Your kitty counts on you to be his advocate.  You obviously know that.  Waste no more time here,  we have told you what you need to do.  Get in touch with the local animal shelter and find out who their vet is.  Your vet could live nextdoor, but if she is of no help, what good is that???

Please forgive me for being blunt, but your cat is very sick.

Please update when you can.  He is in my prayers.

I would call the E-Vet and ask for the results of the ultrasound, if one was done.  Then you can take those results either to your regular vet or to another vet.  If you are in the U.S., you might check a site like Yelp or Citysearch to get reviews on other vets in your region.  I'm concerned that if your vet told you the kitty had an actual bladder infection (as opposed to cystitis) and only suggested cranberry tablets and wet food that the infection may have spread to his kidneys.  An infection due to bacteria should be treated with antibiotics.  I am surprised that your vet didn't do a urinalysis to determine whether bacteria was present in the urine.

Sorry you guys!! I've been so busy lately...

We did call the E-Vet, and the bladder ultrasound came out fine, nothing abnormal or odd there...

Since when I have posted, we have been to the vet twice. He started peeing blood in the kitchen again. There was a substitute vet in since my reg. was on vacation.

She was VERY thorough. She seems that there is something going on with his kidneys, and said that we should definitely talk to our normal vet when she got back.

The next day, Dr was back and decided that he just had another bladder infection, so, sent us on our way. (Water and wet food should 'push' out whatever it is'.)

Well Sammy has been getting progressively worse :( He stopped eating last night, and since then he will just actually SLEEP in the litterbox.

OBVIOUSLY, he does not have a bladder infection, we have given him cranberry tablets in the food he is not eating, my mom had the heart to 'force' feed him some wet food, but I couldn't.
This vet just isn't doing it for us. We have explained our situation to countless vets, and one that seemed very professional scheduled us in for an appointment on Monday.

Wish us luck....

Your cat needs antibiotics for UIT's or bladder infection or any infection for that matter.  Water will not "push it out".  Get a new VET today!

Are you kidding me? These vets are killing this cat! Sorry for being blunt now, but this is beyond ridiculous! Sending you your way with cranberry tablets? When this kitty is peeing blood all over the place? For months? WHAT??? I see no mention there once of this cat being on antibiotics, fluids, pain medication, having a urinalysis... If you don't have this done to your cat, he will die. If your cat doesn't go on antibiotics (the correct one) NOW, on wet food ONLY, on anti-inflammatory, pain medication, and likely a prescription food, it will very very likely die a very painful death. Please, do not wait a day - they can do all this in the e-vet. Do NOT wait for monday - go to the E-VET and demand all these things. Demand an antibiotic, demand a shot of pain medication, pain medication to take home, and buy some prescription food (Hills C/D). Then Monday you can do the testing. But please, please, I beg you do not put this baby through this excruciating pain any longer.
If they don't want to give it to him, demand - do not leave without treatment. This is crazy IMHO. :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:
P.S.: Your cat HAS to eat - if he doesn't eat, the liver can be affected, causing fatty liver disease, and he can die from the too - you absolutely have to force feed him. There is a food called Hills A/D which you can get from your vet that's perfect for syringe feeding - get some large syringes at Petco - the brand is called Four Paws - they are very cheap, and 1/2 oz in volume - get 3 sets, feed 1 1/2 oz per meal, several meals a day - you want to feed about a can a day.... yep, kitty has to eat about what it eats regularly...... it can make the difference in between life and death..... more :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:

Honestly, if your cat is having kidney problems, you cannot wait.  I cannot stress the need to see a different vet enough.  Kidney problems can kill your kitty.  I had a cat diagnosed with Chronic Renal Failure 6 years ago.  We had to have her put to sleep last December from the disease.  If treated, your kitty can live a long life, BUT you must get help NOW!!!
