I am concerned about Candy

Hi all
I am a little concerned about Candy. She sees a vet reguarly as she has a lot of issues, mainly mental her behaviour has always been a little odd and a few years back I was told by a vet after tests that concluded nothing that she had the feline equivalent to downs syndrome. She has checks and is always fine health wise but she has no co ordination and a lack in balance, she tries to jump on things and mis judges mainly leading to her falling. Its quite disturbing as she has also a few times fallen off the arm of the sofa when she has been asleep.I have been told that this is normal,I have also looked on the internet for info and seen that it is common in cats with this condition. At her last health check she was fine and I know she is ok health wise now as nothing has changed but she has started to get very angry with her own tail and I mean quite badly. She walks around and if she catches a glimpse of it out of the corner of her eye she grows and attacks it.
This has become worse over the past couple of days, more so today she hates the sight of her tail and has been constantly attacking it,apart from that she is her self and nothing else has changed.I am really not sure what to do,any advice would be appreciated.xx

I must add that i have never been given any 100% evidence that she has the feline equivalent to downs syndrome this was just a vets verdict after inconclusive tests.i am severely worried bout her behaviour.i must also say she has a flea allergy.I have just spoken to my mum who has told me to book her in with the vet tomorrow.x

FHS. Feline Hyperesthesia Syndrome. There seems to be an epidemic of this lately, all over the world, I see these posts about cats attacking their tails in every forum I belong to.

What are you feeding? is always my first question. FHS sometimes seems diet related, if the cat is eating a lower quality food, with questionable ingredients, including artificial anything, dyes, sodium nitrates or sodium nitrites, corn, wheat, gluten, and menadione sodium bisulfite to name a few.

Watch some youtube videos on FHS cats and see if any act like your Candy.

Treatments include diet change (grain free high quality canned without any of the junk listed above), and/or medications such as amitriptyline,, prozac, and phenobarbital.

I have read about this, thank you for your reply. This seems to point to all of the symptoms that Candy has,I think she has had this all along and whatever the first vet said was wrong.I am going to buy a feliway difffuser and also I have looked at the ingredients on the cat food and it does seem to contain a lot of what was listed.I think a lot of the uk wet foods have these ingredients in.Does anyone know of anyone suitable foods that I could get in the uk that might help?

Thanks

Just off the top of my head, Applaws, Almo nature, Schesir and Porta 21 don't have all those additives. Cosma from zooplus.co.uk is a cheaper alternative. Bozita is also a possibility. They're all European brands and available online. Check out zooplus - they have a big variety and reasonable prices.

Thank you very much,I will look into this,I am willing to try anything before I go down the route of possible medication.I don't think she could take much more bless her.x

My mum has been into the local pharmacy today they do cat foods such as Hills,Science plan e.t.c... she was is going to ask what would be suitable for Candy.I will let you know later what she tells me when I speak to her.I think this may mean a change to all the cats diets which is fine with me.x
