My cat has been diagnosed with Feline Difuse Iridial Melanoma - eye cancer. he is 7 years old. Our Feline Opthalmologist says that we should bring him in for monitoring every 3 months but that we should eventually take out his eye to prevent spreading.
I asked why we wouldn't just take the eye out now and she says it isn't that bad yet. My husband (and his brother, who is a doctor) thinks that the vet just wants the money for monitoring him every 3 months. What do you guys think? I'm afraid that removing his eye will lower his quality of life - he does go outside sometimes.

Thoughts? Experiences?

Your husband and brother in law are right. Find another vet for second opinion and go ahead and get that eye removed.

Losing an eye will not affect his quality of life, the spread of cancer will and it can spread quite quickly in three months.
Cat's really don't rely much on acute eyesight, aside from hunting.
Even so, when my mother kept barn cats, her best hunter was a one eyed tom.
They rely more on smells, sound, and tactile senses.
He will need to be restricted to inside until the socket fully heals (doesn't take as long as you'd think).
