Picasso has Ringworm!

Ugh, I took as much precaution as I could when working at the shelter with kitten infected. I wore gloves, washed often, sanitized, took my clothes off before the kits touched them and showered before touching the cats or feeding them.

Picasso has signs of ringworms. I am upset. I called the shelter, told them I wasn't going back anymore. They have lotrimin for me to use on her.. is that OK to use?

here's a pic. I put some alcohol on it to hopefully prevent it from spreading. Does anyone have any other suggestions, short of going to the vet? I think it's early stages and I can cure it.. ideas?

There are suggestions in Cheylink's thread in the CL (she was asking for vibes but the issue of Maia's ringworm came up).

I'm so sorry!!!!!! Glad you caught it early, and hope you have no trouble clearing it up!

thanks. Found the thread. I called my vet and left a message, to see how much it would be to take her in. I am a bit behind in my payments this month, going to a vet would be a set back, but if I heve to take her in, it's a setback I'll gladly take (hopefully the insurance will cover most!)

IMO, we've had most success w/ oral meds at the shelter here. We use fluconazole for 6 weeks. But you never know what will work best for Picasso.

Online research says oral is best.

I am also concerned about my other cat, Monet. he's older, so he might be safer, but still! he's a tuxedo and hard to see his skin

Oral doesn't have it's drawbacks, they can be hard on the liver. When I had ringworm in the house I went ahead & treated the cats exposed all at once w/ oral meds.

thanks WCL! I will be talking to the vet in the morning and see what she says over the phone before I bring her in. She might recommend something easy for me.

Panda, I glanced at those threads, that's great! Mittens is a great name! I know, it's amazing, 3 years ago, I didn't like cats so much.. now I can't live without them!! LOL Hope all is well with you at least! Wasn't that heard to learn it's me here, huh? Was it my user? LOL

Made an appointment today for 11AM.

The vet called me back right away. It didnt open till 9, and its 9:01 now. Impressive! I will report back here whether its ringworm or not. I have a few questions for the vet about other things with her, so it will be a more of peace of mind trip too.

To quote "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," DON'T PANIC!!!!

It's not a disaster. You can get some athlete's foot treatment at Wal-Mart for next to nothing (less than $5, I think). The spray-on version works, as does the ointment types, etc. I would try that first.

I really am sorry about this. . A few months back at the shelter we had some kittens come in with ringworm. and then my feral Dixie got it too at the shelter. They all recovered since. But it made me really worry about going there. I stopped handling the ringworm kitties. I just couldn't risk it. .

I am sending vibes as you take Picasso to the vet. I would definitely treat aggressively. Oral, dips, topical and possibly shaving down as well. Let us know what the vet suggests.

THe vet was very, very thorough of her checkup on Picasso. I've never, ever seen a vet take such care and look over every inch of her and take her sweet time listening to lungs and heart. I really like her.

since it was just one spot, she told me to get some lamisil cream and apply it. Keep an eye on the area, if it gets bigger and spreads, call her back. She thinks it could be a nip from Monet, or the early stages of ringworm.

Everything else, and my other concerns came out perfect. She's one healthy kitty!

I just gotta put up with Monet's hissing and growling at her (and me). geesh.

or, alternatively, yeast infection treatment - the 2% ones (like monistat/miconazole)....
But here is the thing: those creams can be too strong, and irritate the skin. To me, what worked the best was Colloidal Silver - Soaked a little cotton ball and applied to the area in the am, and the pm. Worked like a charm.
I did not isolate Lucky, the stress on her would be too much, and also, the ringworm spores are microscopic and would go through the A/C vents, clothes, shoes, anyways.
Worst case scenario, build their immune system and they will fight on their own.
If you catch it, miconazole will get rid of it in no time - it is really not that big of a deal.
It is a big deal if you have many cats, a cattery, kittens, young children, pets who are immune compromised, etc. But not in normal circumstances....
Stay AWAY from google - it will scare the crap out of you.
Oh, this is the colloidal Silve I use on the "kids" (I use (topically) on all their scratches, wounds, bites, and me too (if their play bites break skin, scratches, etc. - NEVER got an infection here, and got rid of ringworm: Amino Acid and Botanical Supply Colloidal Silver)
