Sore to the touch

Hi, My cat Nellie has hurt himself some how. Yesterday he spent the whole day in the dog lot, just sitting and sleeping. I figured he was tired from a night of prowling. I went over to pet him and when I got to the end of his body near his tail, he really meowed loudly. He is able to walk with no problem and he even jumped on to and off of the feeding table. I checked his legs and there is no pain there at all and his legs move like they should, but when I touch the area near his tail on his back, he really meows and when I gently touched that area he jumped or flinched would be a better word. We live in the county, so he roams freely, he has been near the horses, perhaps one stepped on him or something or maybe he fell asleep up high on something and rolled over and fell..So, what can I do to see what the problem could be. He is eating well and this am I saw him running down the driveway to the barn. I know I cant give any medicine I would give my dogs. If this continues I will take him to the vet but hope this will mend itself. Any advise or steps I can take to see just what hurts him without me getting hurt myself..by a flying claw? I just checked Nellie and the base of his tail where it connects to his body is quite swollen..just to let you know more information.

I think a vet trip is the best course of action. Cats hide pain so very well; you can be sure he's hurting more than what you see. If there's any bone injury, you want it to set right, and the vet will be able to ensure that.

I hope it's not serious!!! Let us know how it goes, ok?

Thanks Auntie. I called the vet and they said keep an eye out and call tomorrow. The cat is eating and such and running, so Im sure its not a bone problem. Night is falling here so I thought I should check him one more time. I found all my courage and took a good look at the sore spot and low and behold there is some sort of wound. Couldnt tell exactly where, but puss was coming out. I cleaned the area with some peroxide and water, did this a few times. Nellie finially had enough and started to growl and even hissed at me. I will call the vet tomorrow morning and take him in for some antibiotics. Nellie is a wonderful cat who I raised from a tiny kitten and have handled him in many ways, so when he growled and hissed, I knew he meant business. Will let you know what happens come morning. I put him in the barn where he wont be tempted to prowl thru the night.

Well, I checked Nellie this morning and well, she seems a little better. Last night the wound oozed a green yellow puss, this morning its like a light reddish/pinkish color. Still gonna call the vet.

Sounds like your kitty got bit or scratched and it abscessed. Definitely get kitty to the vet for the spot to be drained and for an antibiotic.

Went to the vet and got some antibiotics for Nellie. I drained the wound myself and it looks good. The vet knows me and my animals and knows if I need him, he is just a phone call away. I will give it a couple of days for the antibiotics to work. If it looks worse, I will take him in. Thanks everyone.

Good! Glad you got it drained and he's on antibiotics. Abscesses can be very nasty if not dealt with in a timely manner.

Keep us posted on how he's doing.

Well, Ole Nellie is back to normal. I drained the wound again yesterday. I applied a warm moist cloth and low and behold tons of crude came out. Cleaned it with some peroxide. Been giving antibiotics two times a day and today, cant even see the wound and he doesnt have a problem with me touching the area. I will continue the antibiotics for a few more days, just in case. Thanks everyone for your replies.

Glad you're seeing improvement, StubbyChester!

Unless you want to chance the infection coming back stronger than before, however, it's very important you continue the antibiotics until he's had the full course.
