Bee has had health problems since we got her in March, 2011. She is only 9 months old. When she came to us she had salmonella (which we didn't know about until after tests).
She had been experiencing sick and diarreah (sorry, can't spell!!), and it had mucus in it. Her sister Poppy also had it.
She was also showing flu-like symptoms. She couldn't keep her food or her water down.
After many visits at the vets, we discussed putting them down. Sometimes they would poo without realising it because it was so bad. We had only one solution given to us, and that was to feed them a basic diet of Whiskars supermeat (the lowest of the low, apparently).
To our surprise, it worked! But the happiness didn't last for long as within a month Bee was back to doing her usual mucus poo and diarreah.

With time it managed to clear.

But we are now having the same problems and are back to square one. Bee and Poppy have both been vomiting and doing nasty poos for the last 3 days, despite not eating. Between them they have had about a mouthful of food, yet they are still being sick and pooing, and the poo is how it was back when they had salmonella. It is clear that the problem they had from their crap previous owner has damaged their internal organs and they are going to have to deal with this for the rest of their lives.
It is hard for us as a family as we are having to completely alter our lives for the cats. We also have 2 young children under 4 that have come to us with cat poo in their hair where it was so runny the cats have ran past them and have got it caught in the babies' hair. It has also been found on our pillows, worktops, clothes, you name it, it has been there.

We are now faced with a trip to the vets in an hours time, which could lead to the question being asked, 'Do you wish to have your cats euthanized?' Like it was asked the last time.

We think it is unfair on our poor cats to have to deal with this, and it is also important we put the young children first. However, my heart is telling me no, and it feels like it is breaking when I think of them being taken from me to be put to sleep, and to never see them awake again.

Please help me, I don't know what to do. I feel like crying at the thought. Help

Also, I apologise if none of this makes sense, it is hard for me to explain at the best of times, but even harder when I feel like this
Please ask questions if I have made it hard to understand. xx

I am so sorry. This breaks my heart to read, I can't imagine how you feel. Not an easy choice. I wish I could help you make the choice.
Thinking of your kitties.

Personally, I'd be going to another vet. This is a repetitive, non-fatal condition affecting both cats. Because both cats have it you can immediately rule out things like partial obstructions of the gut or physical deformities, and so you're left with infection, infestation or stress. That's a very wide swathe of possible underlying causes - but even so - To the question "Would you like your cats euthanised" I'd be answering "no, I'd like you to diagnose the problem and bloody fix it"

Before putting them down, I'd also suggest a second and possibly 3rd opinion. If you can find a cat only vet, that would be a great choice. Sounds like it's a chronic problem that might possibly be treatable. I suppose you've done the test to check for tritrichomonas foetus??

Definietly get a second opinion. If you are having problems with poo getting everywhere, for now you could keep them in a spare bedroom or bathroom. That will also rule out that they are getting into something.

And instead of Whiskas (which is the weirdest recommendation of food for a sick cat..) you might try a boiled chicken and rice diet instead (if simplicity is the goal).

I agree with everyone else - find another vet, get another opinion. My vet once asked me that question & I set him straight. I told him if he didn't find an answer to solve the problem, I'd find someone else to treat my cats! He's been excellent, just isn't used to many people going to the lengths I'll go to for my cats.

I have to chime in also and say go to another vet and have it looked into by some one new.Doesn't sound like yhis vet has tried much as to medicines.Just diet changes? There are many other things that should be tried before giving up on such young cats.

We tried all other foods before (inculding fresh fish, chicken etc) and none of them worked. The lowest of the low crap meat was the only thing that was working. Both cats are under severe stress and are shaking when they are going to the vets, crying, hissing etc, and it just isn't fair on them. The tests are in the £2000-£3000 range tops if they get negatives on everything else, and as a student I just can't afford it and my insurance won't cover it as my poor cats had this problem before I got them insured and I went to the vets for it.
And as for medicine they have had so much thrown at them in their short lives they recognise the pill packets when we get them out of their drawer!

The problem is internal, that is clear as it seems (to the vet) that they have faulty livers which aren't digesting the food properly. I'm totally heartbroken and so torn right now I just don't understand how this has happened to my poor babies. I wish I could just have my gorgeous cats without all the problems.
I hate to think they are suffering.

I'm wondering about something. Could your babies have (congenital) liver disease and/or possibly a congenital liver shunt?

Another thing I'm wondering about would be gastrointestinal disease such as colitis. (Cats can start having symptoms of colitis as soon as they're weaned.)

The symptoms you mention would be typical of several conditions, including the two I've just mentioned.

Could you possibly talk to your vet and ask what your vet means specifically by
they have faulty livers which aren't digesting the food properly?
Like everyone else I also believe you need to consult another vet.

Also, please check for a PM from me.

Bee&Poppy were laid to rest yesterday afternoon, together. They were ill right through to the end, and it turns out that Bee actually had very thin veins and poor blood circulation which made things even worse
I haven't stopped crying but I know deep down it was for the best as they were suffering so much. Neither had eaten in 4 days.

I am going to love them forever and pray that they are having fun up there together, now they have crossed the rainbow bridge. I literally feel heartbroken but I can't be selfish. I had to put them first.

Love always to my angels xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I am so sorry - you tried everything you could, and you loved them - I believe they knew that, and are now happy playing over the Bridge, and thanking you for caring so much about them.
