Hello to all, I appear, I am named Céline, I am 35 years old, I am a breeder of Maine Coon, recently, I am helped by the other caresses in my steps to acquire some experience(experiment), I would never thank them for it enough (they will recognize)... I have at present 3 females which live with us, one sterilized of 3 years 1/2, one of 1 year 1/2, and one of 8 months, I begin slowly, my priority not being to become a big breeding, but a serious breeding taking care of the health of its cats. I saw in couple and have 3 children, 2 boys, 9ans, 14 years old and a 2-year-old girl. I am also used(employed) commercial general-purpose for a hypermarket(large surface) part-time, at present on parental leave. We live since August ( 2011 ) in a big house of 200 m2 with 21 ares of ground, thus many projects in prospect(perspective) to facilitate the life of our spitzes.

Well, you know about everything...

Polydactylism is a bit more common on Maine Coons than other breeds, as it is a autosomal dominant genetic mutation, originally caused by high inbreeding (or so I've read and heard).
It can cause the cat to have severe foot pain, problems with learning to walk properly which will later develop other issues like hip, joint or spinal problems due to abnormal walking, claw issues and infections (cat may need to be declawed). However many people seem to think it's cute, and therefor some people want to breed these cats. Of course not all polydactyl cats have these problems, and some even learn to use their extra toes as 'thumbs'.

Unfortunately I have seen few of the not so lucky polydactyls, it didn't end well for them and this has left me against breeding them on purpose. (No offence to those who don't agree with my opinion).

I will go back to English! Thank you for the information - My brother has a polydactyl cat, but it is not a Maine Coon. Welcome again to the site, and good luck with your breeding programme.
