I'm asking for rays/prayers/vibes again, not for us, but for a gorgeous little dog that we want to foster.
I got an email the other day from the rescue group about a group of dogs that are scheduled to be PTS this coming week. They only email me when they're in dire need because I'm on an indefinite leave of absence from fostering for personal reasons.
In the list is a gorgeous 10 year old staffy/lab mix. I saw his picture, and I question whether he has any lab in him at all, but regardless, he's grandfathered in to our stupid BSL law because of his age. Mike used to have a pitty and I've always wanted a staffy. Mike's was put down because of the BSL law (long story) and we both broke down and started crying when I told him about this boy.
He's been adopted out and returned for "going after" other dogs on leash. The shelter where he's at has introduced him to many dogs, big and small, without issue and to cats - he LOVES them. He's up to date on shots, neutered, housebroken and all around sounds like a great little boy. I emailed the rescue and said that we could take him - I need all the hope in the world that he hasn't already been put down. We suspect that he was returned because someone adopted him just because of his breed, not knowing anything about them, then decided they didn't want him and returned him with a BS excuse so that they wouldn't look bad.
We have big plans for this old boy if we can pull him. He'll have a home here forever if he's never adopted. We plan on taking him to antiBSL events, getting him his CKC Canine Good Neighbour certificate and train/show him in obedience or rally if he takes to it.
I have grown really jaded from rescue, which is why I had to take a break. I would get so depressed about not being able to save them all that I would end up resenting my own fosters if they weren't adopted out quickly enough because they were taking up room for dogs that were dying. This boy has lit something in me and both of us just want to give him another chance at life. We find it horrible that because of his age and breed that he's being over looked.
I told the rescue to get in contact with the shelter he's at as soon as possible and that we could drive to Toronto tomorrow afternoon to pick him up if we could get things rolling. He's going stir crazy in the shelter, which is just lessening his chance for adoption, added to the fact that he isn't being advertised as adoptable because of the reason he was returned and he's doomed.
