Hello from France, I just joined this site and wanted to thank you for some useful insight on the subject. Indeed the "man I love" and I are planning to live together (in the USA). Big problem has stemmed out one simple phrase : he wants to adopt a cat together if and only if he (the cat) is declawed (he is worried about a leather couch....no comment). Needless to say, I am aghast. In my little european mind (where, btw, declawing is forbidden by law) this one sentence made me ponder : how different my sensibility is from his? Believe me, this question goes very far.....

I found the text in this book spot on, but the illustrations aren't helpful at all. Good over all book

This mat caught my eye because of its size and texture, which traps fine litter rather well. It's large enough for jumbo litterboxes, which is also a plus. It's not quite as easy to clean as a...

This scoop was a freebie with some clumping litter I bought last year, and I like it so much that I've bought a second one. It's perfect for fine clumping litter, which it sifts very thoroughly....

I've moved your post to a new thread so you get the attention it deserves.
Unfortunately, declawing is legal in the US. But there are many alternatives to consider such as Soft Paws which cover the claw.
Also, you could look for a cat that has already been declawed.

I was going to suggest that too.. Our local animal shelter has dozens of cats that are already declawed waiting to be adopted.

Welcome to the site
I have just moved to the UK after a few years in Paris along with my French cat!
I understand your concerns. Until i found this site, i had no idea that such a thing as declawing exisited. Like you i was horrified. It seems to be a disablement of an animal for the convenience of a human.
As a european, there is no way i could let this happen to an animal of mine and to be honest, i'm not sure i could be with someone who thought that this is ok.
As other posters have said, you could adopt a poor cat that has already had this done and there are "soft claws". However for me personally, i would find both options to be an unfair comprimise to my principles...
Perhaps your partner has been brought up to think that such a thing is normal - just as we belive that its far from normal. There are many anti declawing resourses on this site. Do you think that your partner would take a look at them with you?
Good luck and please let us know how you get on - Gilbert says bon soir
