Hello,
There's a small black kitten that I've been feeding recently. He's probably about two months old; he still has a kittenish yowl and those small round kitten eyes. Anyway, my cat is an outside cat (not ideal, but that's the situation) and sometimes runs into the kitten. I feed the kitten at the extreme end of my driveway, to try to keep him away from Snowball, who stays in my yard. However, sometimes she jumps the fence to come out to see me, and then something weird happens. The kitten starts yelling at the top of his lungs, I'm not sure if it's crying or what. The first time it happened I thought he was being aggressive, but I would think he would know how to hiss and spit by now. Would a kitten cry out if he was being aggressive? I'm thinking maybe it's something else. My cat hisses at him, and will try to chase him away, but for some reason the second I leave he will come right back out and start crying to her. He doesn't do this with the neighborhood ferals; one time I put food out for him and I looked out the window and saw an adult cat come and eat his food. He just sat there, right next to the big cat, and didn't make a peep. Also, I've seen him run from other feral cats, but for some reason he keeps trying to approach Snowball. Could he possibly be trying to make friends? And why her, but not the other cats? There may not be an answer to this question, just putting it out there in case anyone has seen a similar situation. By the way, he's normally very silent; he only cries when Snowball is present. Also, he's too young at this point for neutering (my vet doesn't do early neutering) but I'm trying to get him used to eating out of a trap so that when the time comes it won't be a big deal. Thanks for any advice.

The kitten knows that this area is Snowball teritory and cry or meow to make known that he or she is there and to let your cat know "don't come near me" . Like a warning . The other cats may know the kitten and so there is no neet for the kitten to act . I don't know if I make sense in any way to you . But that is how I see it the way you explaint the situation .

Thanks, that makes sense. Also, I thought that the kitten knew the other cats, but the other day I put some food down (for another feral) and I noticed the kitten, Junior, slowly came up to the food. When he started to eat the food the feral came out and then the kitten started howling like crazy. He actually backed down the bigger cat! I did come close so that he would back away; I want to make sure he gets his kitten food and the ferals get their food. Junior definately feels that the bushes on my neighbor's side is his territory, as he basically stays there the whole day.

Something new has developed that I'm happy about; I talk to him! When he encountered Snowball, he would meow a bit. I noticed that they started to "talk," because she would let out a meow and he would immediately let out a louder one. They went back and forth like this for awhile, and then I decided to get in on the action. For some bizarre reason I can do an excellent meow, and he did indeed respond to it. Now, when I go out to feed him, I keep meowing until he responds, and then I put his food out. Hopefully this is a step in getting him to be somewhat social.
