Well I took Kattie to a new vet today for a second opinion. The last vet just didn't give me good vibes into what she was thinking, plus the whole metacam ordeal. Anyways, a week later and she is still limping. I took her to a cat only clinic here in Tacoma and he is awesome. He was able to handle Kattie by himself whereas both the other doctor and the tech had to take her in back to examine her.
He said that it probably isn't a joint issue, although her toes probably have a little arthritis from her declaw. (who knows what kind of hack job was done to her). He took one look at her pads and said that that was the source of her pain. When I told the other vet that her pads looked sore, she dismissed it as normal. Well the new vet said this sometimes happens in declawed cats because the structure of the foot has changed. There are no new claws growing, and we still don't know why the toes look raw. He said it almost looks like a chemical burn but I have no idea how that would be because she is indoors and I use mostly all natural stuff for cleaning.
He said it wasn't warranting antibiotics at this point, but he wants to increase her intake of omega 3's and 6's. This will help the feet heal naturally. We are also going to increase the Vit E and maybe even rub some directly on the pads to moisturize them. He also said that the glucosamine and hyalauronic acid is good to start her on as she will probably start to get arthritis if she doesn't have it already in those front feet. He said that it will take awhile to heal but will get better on these supplements. He also said he has used metacam in the past, but only if there was no other alternative. Those that he uses it in get their bloodwork monitored closely for the duration they are on it. He also doesn't like the injectable and won't use that. He will use the oral but very conservatively after bloodwork. I told him about the dose they wanted Kattie to take, 0.33 ml and he said that was a loading dose and he would only give her .10 ml maybe once a week if at all. we will be holding off on that. I do like this new vet. He seems down to earth yet knows his stuff. He isn't pushing a million tests or pain meds, and he honed in on those cracked pads like I did.
Does anyone else have any ideas on sore foot pads in declawed kitties? I feel bad for her, but she is getting around, any other insight would be welcome.
