About a year ago, I took in a large kitten the vet told me was about 5 weeks od, but she was healthy.

When I brought her to be spayed, the vet got a surprise right before starting the operation. I picked up my little guy later that day (neutered).

Well, it was cheaper!

I must say I have seen several tortie males in cat shows, so it could be more common than many people think. But rare and unusual anyway.

I was going to say the same thing, they aren't all sterile either.

Did you get him to the vets to confirm the sex?

Over the river and through the woods...
One of our barn cats is a tortie male. His orange markings aren't very obvious unless he gets close and personal with you, but there are there. It is rare, but not as rare as a true calico male (white with bold patches).

In any case, Dusty is gorgeous!! I have a soft spot for torties, regardless of sex.

What do you mean? He clearly looks like a blue tortie to me?

They aren't Russian Blues unless you have registration papers for them. . .cats very rarely have any identifiable breed in them, unlike dogs. An unregistered cat is a domestic shorthair (or longhair).

Dusty is blue, yes, but he also has tortie markings, which is fairly unusual for a male. I've read that the chance of a male tortie are 1 in 3000, but I don't know if that's 1 in 3000 cats or 1 in 3000 torties :lol3:.

He is gorgeous, but not a Russian Blue, quite apart from the lack of papers. For a start, RBs have green eyes. And Dusty is a mix of colours.

Yeah, as everyone already mentioned, Dusty is not a Russian Blue and it's very unlikely he even has any RUS in his lines. Russian Blues are solid blue cats with vivid green eyes. Also the head is very different than Dusty's. Dusty is a blue tortoiseshell domestic shorthair.

A cat of a recognized breed is registered and has registration papers/pedigree.

This is what a Russian Blue looks like:

And one more pic 'cause it's so darn cute:

Do not google pics of cat breeds, half of the pics are something completely different breed than what you are searching for. Look for breed clubs' sites, show pics, catteries and cat registries' sites (i.e. TICA, CFA, FIFé).
