First of all, I would like to ask is it a good idea for a shorthair to have hairball remedies? If so, what kind/brand do you suggest? Thanks

When Genever hacks up a hairball, I give her Laxatone for a few days. Luckily she loves the malt flavor and licks it off my finger like a treat. If your cat doesn't like it, then put it on her paw and she'll lick it off to get cleaned up. Otherwise, you could try hairball treats, I think they have mineral oil or something like that in them to get things moving along... You can find either at Petco/Petsmart or online or probably even at the vet. I've bought Laxatone from my vet before and it actually wasn't much more than what I'd paid at Petco. Good luck!

I use hairball treats but Ive also head that a 1/4 of a pat of unsalted butter is good also.

I had a vet tell me a teaspoon of vegetable oil in their kibbles.

My cat rarely gets hairballs (3 times in four years), but when I hear him trying to hack one up, I give a dab of unsalted butter for a few days or add a teaspoon of canned pumpkin to his food, for a few days as well. The extra fiber helps things move along.

Wet food, brushing frequently, and daily dose of plain canned pumpkin.
