Midnight is dehydrated

Luna & Midnight went to the vet on Saturday. They both had blood tests and Midnight had a urine analysis done. Everything is ok with Luna. Midnight's urine is good no crystals.

The vet said Midnight is dehydrated, he's not getting enough water. I don't understand how that's possible?

He drinks a lot of water more than Lynxx ever did, more than Luna ever does. I told that to the vet he saw back in December. That vet did an x-ray. His kidneys and the rest of his stomach was fine.

How do I make Midnight drink even more water than he already does?

Put water in his food? These guys all drink a lot but I always add water in their food. Even dry food the odd time they get that.

Yea, add water to his food, no matter if it's wet or dry. But if he is eating dry only, see about switching to or adding wet. Dry food eaters don't get enough water, I don't care what anybody says.

Get him to eat wet food..... and add water to it....
If you add water to dry, you need to feed within 15-30 minutes - do not leave sitting around....

Hi hun . Agree with all of the above. I would start offering them one wet meal a day (if you already don't) and add a little bit of water. If they are not used to eating wet, start slowly with the water. Some kitties LOVE a little bit of water added into their canned food. Also, you can add a little water to a dry meal, but as Carolina says, take it up in twenty minutes if they don't eat it all up in one sitting.

There are several tricks that you can use to help a kitty transition from one food to the next. CatInfo.org has a great article (Transitioning Feline Dry Food Addicts to Canned Food) that goes into a lot of detail; I'm sure you'll find information in there that will be helpful, but in the meantime, here's a list of things you can try:

Drip a bit of tuna juice over the new wet food, or sprinkle catnip, Parmesan Cheese, Forti Flora flakes, fish food flakes (weird, but it works), or some crumbled up freeze-dried meat treats (Whole Life's chicken works wonderfully on my kitties) over the food.

Good luck! It's a pain when our kitties fight us in the switch to a healthier food, eh?

Who are these cats that refuse to eat wet food? I'd tell my cats about that but they would never believe me. They go nuts over wet food and would be in heaven if they got to eat it every day. Unfortunately though their momma can only afford to feed it as a treat except for to the one little booger who simply refuses to eat dry food. If it was up to her she'd live off french fries.

That's a great idea, actually. I never thought of it but Parker was obsessed with eating my fish food flakes when I had my aquarium running.

Not to point too fine a point on it, but kibble is far more the feline equivalent of french fries than canned. That one kitty of yours who refuses to eat kibble is actually the smarter of your bunch.

Take a peek at catinfo.org, feline-nutrition.org or littlebigcat.com for more info.

I agree about canned food. And adding a bit of water. You might want to nuke the food in the microwave for just a few seconds to warm it up; sometimes that will make a bit more appealing to a kitty.

Do you think Midnight would drink some Sip or some Whiskas milk for cats? Each one of our cats gets a bit of Sip every night before bed. It's simply milk that is good for cats; they can digest it easily than regular milk. Honestly, our cats love the stuff. I by two 3-packs of Sip every week for them.

Also, if you make your own broth (chicken, poultry, beef, even some vegetable), add a little broth to the canned food. The reason I'm saying about homemade broth is that you can control the sodium content. I know sodium isn't good for humans, but I don't know about cats. Our cats consider that a bit of a treat, too, but I make my own, so I know what's in it.

Good luck with your Midnight!

My cats love drinking from a fountain. I pick up table-top fountains at yard sales, clean them good, and the cats love them. The one they're using now gets refilled a couple of times a day--that's a lot of extra water. Of course, you could always buy an actual cat fountain.
I also add warm water to their can of wet food every morning.

Lauren, you're not a dunce; you're just having a brain fart!
Table top fountains are those cute little gizmos you see at places like Dollar General. I always buy the electric ones, because the battery-operated ones die after about a day. They have a tiny pump in the bottom resevoir and are usually tiered. If I don't get ours turned on first thing in the morning, my Hannah sits by it and howls at me.

This is similar to the one I'm using, but mine doesn't have the burning candles.

Oh, awesome! I never thought about using a tabletop fountain as a "watering hole". I had considered something like a Drinkwell but it's kind of expensive. This seems like a great alternative!

I don't have a fountain for them, there is always someone home to give them fresh water all the time. I always do add water to the can food.

After Wessie had his UTI and we switched to wet food, he stopped drinking water from his bowl. (He does drink it when he has dry, though.) When I feed him I always add some extra water to his food. It really gets more water into their system!
