Our old cat (Lucky, male) has lived with us going on 3 years now. We rescued him off the street. He has seizures, but is very sweet and loving. When we saw Ziggy (male) in a pet store, who is 10 months old, we wanted to adopt him because he has seizures too, and needs to take a pill twice a day to control the seizures. When we brought Ziggy home we introduced Ziggy using the crate method, where we kept Ziggy in the crate while Lucky sniffed around. We let Ziggy out into his own room with food bowls and litter box and kept them seperated.
We are now trying to let Ziggy roam free, but Lucky keeps on pouncing on Ziggy and attacking him. Lucky will start by crouching low and 'stalking' or 'sneeking' up onto Ziggy and will pounce onto his back, biting into Ziggy's neck and dragging him down to the ground. Ziggy just freezes whenever this happens, and just lays there and lets Lucky continue biting into his neck. If Lucky gets anywhere near Ziggy... Ziggy will hunker down low, cringe his entire body, flatten his ears, and freeze. There is never any growling or hissing or spitting from both cats at all. Lucky never flattens his ears either. Each time this has happened I have broken them up by grabbing Lucky off of Ziggy, except for two times. The first time, after biting and dragging Ziggy to the ground, Lucky let go and walked away. The second time, Lucky kept on biting into Ziggy's neck in different places and wouldn't stop...like chewing or gnawing at him, until I couldn't watch it anymore and grabbed Lucky off of Ziggy.
I am trying to figure out if this is serious attacks from Lucky that I should be worried about? Should I interfere? I figure Lucky is just asserting himself as dominant over the other cat, but is this too aggressive? A couple of websites I read say that cats will hiss and growl at each other to assert dominance and only when they attack each other should you indirectly interfere. But between my two cats there is no hissing or growling that ever happens. Do you think this will ever stop, too? Or will there always be this conflict between them? I try everything to keep the cats calm and relaxed because I know that stress is one trigger for Lucky's seizures (I am not sure about Ziggy yet).
I am concerned about Ziggy too. He is as stiff as a board. He never moves unless it is feeding time. He spends his entire day in one out of three chosen spots in our house. I even have to pick him up and take him to the food bowls or take him to the liter box to get him to do his business. When he starts eating he never stops.. and even eats the left over food out of Lucky's bowl after Lucky is done with it.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!
