There was a big crash at the Indy Car race in Las Vegas today, resulting in the death of Dan Wheldon, who won the Indy 500. I'm seeing reports Vitor Meira was involved, but so were about 13 other cars.

Tragic Crash at Las Vegas Indy Car Race
Hi Mike, yes... Thanks for asking.... He is ok.... His car was totaled, but he is fine... He called a few times, including when he heard of the passing of Dan, and he was desperate, as you can imagine.... He didn't give many details if he was slighted injured or not, but we know he is fine....

It was the most horrendous thing I have ever seen.... It was actually a 15-car crash, or rather, carnage. I could not stop crying, screaming and shaking.... For the longest time we didn't know if Vitor was involved, then we saw he was, and didn't know of his status... Until that Adriana (his wife) got his call.

I don't think Indy has ever seen a crash like this in it's history

The last death was in 2006.... Dan was only 33 years old, and he was this years champion on Indy 500.

This is a very sad day for Indy....

Thanks for asking Mike!

RIP Dan Wheldon, my thoughts and prayers are with your family...

I'm old enough to remember several horrific Indy 500's, such as 1973.

Mike, did you see this one? This was massive... I did not see the 1973.... but this was several cars flying catching on fire... Imagine - 15 cars out of 34. At 220 miles an hour. 2 Cars flew over Vitor - both were on fire. You can picture Dan's crash.... This was not an accident - were 15 at the same time

This race started bad from the beginning. It was not well done - it was bound to happen....

I see that there were concerns from the very beginning over too many cars and speeds too high. A formula for trouble, the teams were saying, and they were right.

Not only that, but there was a prize for $5,000,000 for the best Rookie of the year, so there were TONS of rookies in this race, many only racing THIS race for the prize - many involved in the crash. You put speed, inexperienced drivers, tight course, multiple rows = recipe for disaster.

Take a look at this (ALERT NOT for the LIGHTEST OF HEART)http://globoesporte.globo.com/motor/...mula-indy.html Wheldon's is on the wall, picture 3, #77

Over the river and through the woods...
I just had DH pull this up on the internet, and Wow...I'm speechless! I'm so glad Vitor is ok, but what a tragedy. We don't really follow F1 racing but it's amazing anyone involved walked out alive. I'm used to Nascar where they are strapped in padded seats with cages reinforcing the car. These guys basically are driving kayaks with wheels....wow.

Carolina, I can only imagine what was going through your mind when you saw that. Thank God Vitor is ok.

I was shaking like a leaf. Every time I go to a race, or I see a race, and I see a crash, I immediately look for his car to see if he is alright - this time there were so many cars... If you see in the pictures, Vitor is #14, right in the middle of the mess, under Dan Wheldon, who at this point starts flying. But the crash happened so so fast, you see nothing - just cars flying, debris and fire. Then ambulances helicopters... they took the longest time to give any updates on the drivers....
Thank goodness he called asap, otherwise his wife and his mom (who is here at the moment) would gone nuts.
Dan had just had a baby, who is not even 7 months old yet. He is also survived by a little 2yr little boy and his wife

They were all there, along with his brother and sister...

Vitor is on his way home, I think a lot of drivers are.... Too much to be there.... Nothing to celebrate....

In the snow!!!!
I was out of town all weekend so I just now heard about this - still haven't seen it yet, but I am honestly shocked. I got to see the Indy Car race at Mid-Ohio and I got many of the drivers' autographs.

I am so glad Vitor is all right! I imagine it will take a really long time for the racing community to recover from this. There are probably going to be some new rules and changes for safety because of this.

Hopefully.... Because they changed the rules this year to make it more fun and more exciting to the viewers.... only.... it made it also much more dangerous to the drivers.... There were tons and tons of accidents this year, and finally a lethal one yesterday. The drivers have been complaining for a while - now I hope they will be listened - unfortunately, at a very high cost

What a tragic event
My grandfather started a few Indy races (as a flagger) and my family knows a few of the drivers.

Such a young life taken so quickly. I saw the replays of the crash, quite horrific.
