Hey everyone,

My vet gave me Profender to give to Behr (about 7 months old) because she spotted what she believed was a tapeworm fragment on his bottom. I've applied it successfully with Zoey (about 16 months old) so I was confident I could apply it on my own instead of having the vet do it. Stupid me.

About two hours ago, after he had lunch, I applied it to Behr as directed, just between the shoulder blades. Some got on his fur and ran a little down and to the side as he wriggled just as I was squeezing it onto his skin. When I let him go, he licked it once and spit it out and drank some water, but he kept reaching for it over the next 45 minutes. I stopped him every time I could, but I know he got 2-3 more licks in. It was only the bottom bit of the application that he could reach, but I called the vet and he told me to wash off the part he could reach, and then keep an eye out for anything indicating seizures. I decided to rinse off as much of it as I could, being the super paranoid owner that I am. I rinsed with water first, then went back with a wet washcloth (Seriously, if Behr doesn't hate me already...)

He's sleeping now, which is normal as this is his usual sleep time during the day. I've read too many things online about bad reactions to Profender in the past half hour, and I'm kind of freaking out.

Anything you can say will be helpful. Thank you so much!!!

If you can call your own vet, I'd do so. If not, I'd call poison control and an e-vet and see what they say. The internet can be great, but can also scare the hell out of you. IMO, call the experts. And, heck, mapquest how to get to you local e-vet, just in case. You know, once you know how to get there, you won't have to go.

Thank you for your reply! I know where the emergency vet is, right down the street, which is excellent. On Profender's website it says that if the application site is licked, salivation and vomiting may result, everything else seems like rare complications. Behr's been okay and it's been several hours. He's eaten quite a bit and seems himself *knock on wood*. I've definitely calmed down. He's been through so much already in his life so I think I am just more prone to overreactions when it comes to him.

Thank you so much, again. If something like this happens again, I will remember poison control.

Glad to hear the kitten seems fine. And it's great that your e-vet is so close - here's hoping you never have to go there!

I have problems with Revolution sometimes - my girl wiggles so much I"m always afraid I'm getting the stuff in a spot she'll be able to lick.

I had the same problem with Wendall when I first got him and applied the Profender. He salivated quite alot and I watched him closely. When you have multiple cats they tend to lick eachother as well and might ingest a topical product. I found for spot-on treatments for cats, it is best to apply it right on the back of the head, where the skull meets the spine. That way they can't reach it to lick try as they might
. I think Behr will be alright...
