I don't know if anyone remembers, but I posted awhile ago that Mike had a job interview at a place close to our house and asked for vibes.
He ended up having two interviews with them, the first was the usual talking one, the second was a working interview where he basically went in for a few hours to show them how he worked around a kitchen. Unfortunately, as soon as he walked into the kitchen he knew that he wasn't going to get it. Their kitchen manager is someone that Mike worked with quite some time ago, he didn't like Mike then and obviously still doesn't now, lol. The owner was very impressed, but of course, had to talk it over with the kitchen manager and said that they would get back to him by the next day either way. They never did.
On the upside, just over a month ago one of the little bars that we go to all the time hired Mike on on Thursday nights to host their open mic night. It's going well so far, we're getting more and more people each week. It pays $40 (under the table, lol) and we decided that we'd just run a tab there on Thursdays, then pay it with the money he made at the end of the night. Since they have $3 beers that night and Mike gets 6 Steamwhistle beers for free, we only spend about $20, so we still have the other $20 for the rest of the week. It's been nice because before that, we would only get to go out about once every few months and we were both getting very edgy being stuck in the apartment all the time. When he started doing the open mic they were also hiring for someone in the kitchen. I kept telling Mike to apply, but he wouldn't because he didn't want to make things weird and didn't think that he'd like it. Needless to say, they ended up hiring someone. Almost three weeks ago, Mike finally bit the bullet and asked if they were hiring. The owner told him to bring in his resume as a formality, but if the guy that they hired didn't show that day he'd be hired. Mike went to the interview, the guy didn't show up, and.... HE GOT THE JOB! His official title is dishwasher, lol, but he's also doing other things like prep work, cooking when it's really busy, a bit of bar stuff, etc. He's only working there one or two nights a week, but it's a start and there is definitely the possibility of him getting on there fulltime if someone else leaves and he has learned the menu. His pay schedule is the same as mine (I was hoping it would be opposite so we'd always have money, lol), but he does get tip out on the week that he doesn't get paid, which is nice. He got tip out last week and his frist paycheck comes tomorrow (for the last three weeks). As a little bonus, when they need someone to work the door, I get to do it and get paid $40 too. I guess they figured since we're always there anyways, they might as well put me to work too, lol.
On another good note, we're getting engaged. We have no plans to get married anytime soon, but we've talked about it and we're ready to move onto the next step. Mike started talking about tradition and all that, saying that the ring needed to be three times his monthly paycheck and going on, lol, I told him that I didn't care about that, we can't afford that and it's not what I want. I went online and found the perfect little ring, I absolutely love it. I was talking to my boss the other day about it, showed it to her online from my phone and she started laughing. She showed me her hand and she has the exact same ring, except hers is gold whereas mine will be silver. We're going later today to have my ring sized and to see if there is anyway that we can actually see the ring before we buy it. It's on the jeweller's website as an online only thing, but maybe they'll be able to show me something similar.
On a little bit of a rant - last week we were in a different city, walking around the downtown area, window shopping for rings and just looking around. We went into a few different local jewelry stores and as soon as we were asked our price range they got an attitude like they didn't want to deal with us because we don't have a lot of money. Talk about bad customer service, at the very least they could have said "I'm sorry, we don't have anything in your price range, but we do offer a payment plan if you're interested in that." We probably wouldn't have done it, but we wouldn't have left the store with a sour taste in our mouths and feeling like we didn't matter.
So, that's the update here! Everyone else is doing well - Leiki is stil a little bugger, the dogs are doing well - although Sadie is having some back trouble again, and Turt Russel (the turtle) is great too!
