I just tried a new (at least to me) variety called Sweet Tango. It was delicious!! It was a nice crisp texture but not too crisp either. Just on the tart side; which I liked. My DD and I ate it up!

Normally I go out to a local orchard that seems to have at least a dozen varieties in stock in the fall. They keep a big chart on the wall to explain each one and what it's good for. I usually mix a sweet and a tart for baking pies. It's always come really nice!

I picked up these apples today at the local grocery store (the orchard is a good drive for me). I was reading the signs on them and it surprised me when it said not to use the Granny Smith for baking because it "will ruin the flavor." I've always used them in baking and it's been yummy! So I guess that's a matter of opinion then?

What are your favs for eating and baking?

Nice! I always preferred more tart apples like McIntosh, but I also like most others except red delicious. I like my tree apples, but I just can't tell what they are!
BF made a pie with them on Monday, his first attempt ever, and it is SO GOOD! So they're good for eating and baking, at least.

I love Grannies for eating, but will also use them in a cake or bread and even pie.

For applesauce, I'm a Mutsu girl. Love my Mutsus, also known as Crispins, I think, in some areas. We'll be going to Connecticut soon for about 100 pounds of Mutsus, with which we'll make applesauce, dumplings, and some pies. It's a good eating apple, too. Yes, you read that right. 100 pounds of apples. It's our yearly ritual.

Paula Reds and Idareds are excellent baking apples; that's what my MIL uses in her pies.

Crisp Tango, eh? Sounds really good!

I'd love to have at least two peach and two apple trees in our yard. Along with some blueberry plants, grapevines, and some strawberry plants. I could easily turn the whole back yard into nothing but vegetables and fruits!

I could see that!
And boy I would just LOVE to be your neighbor!!

My Grandparent's grew up having the entire yard as a garden/orchard. Even in the city! My Gram always talks about her parent's plum trees! And the grapes that were made into wine.
