I rescued an abandoned kitten 5 days ago, and its not made a movement yet! Today starts the 6th day! I think hes about 3wks old. Im so very worried! We took him to the vet yesterday and they tried to stimulate him and said that it seemed like he was trying to go but there wasnt really anything they could do for such a young little guy. That was it, "keep trying to stimulate him (which I have been doing before and after every feed from the get-go) and hope for the best." Im really worried about him, surely theres SOMETHING I can try to help him?? Like I said, today will be the beginning of the 6th day with no movement. Im not really sure exactly how much and how often he should be eating but Ive been giving him about 15 mls every 3 or 4 hrs. My vet said "whatever he wants, whenever he wants it" but everyone else says not to overfeed them! Im so confused and I really want to help this lil guy go...I get attached far too easily I think.. If theres no way to help him I was wondering how long he would last without going?

Hi and welcome to the site.

I'm so sorry it is under these circumstances. I don't know what to tell you, I don't really know much about babies, I seem to get them when they are older. I do know that a soft warm and wet wash cloth has helped my mom with her little baby. The terry cloth acted like the mom's tongue and the wet warmth seemed to stimulate her.

I'm sure someone here will be able to help, they are all so kind and knowledgeable. Until someone does I would suggest internet searches for "how to stimulate a kitten's bowel movement", "how much is too much food for a kitten" etc. What ever you can think of until you get something that you haven't tried that works. I would also try searching in this forum for the same stuff, you may find something, you can't be the first person with this situation.

I know that you are stressed out and very worried about this little fellow, thank you for helping him. I, too, get way to attached, way too soon. Good luck and good vibes for your little guy and for you too!

there is a good site for helping orphans and young kittens,
www.kitten-rescue.com

I know there are some advices...

The vet didnt told anything about liquid paraffine?

This is the trick. The problem for people is to get hold of liquid paraffine food grade...

Conserved pumpkin is a common advice in US, but it doesnt work for so small kittens...

Good luck!

Is it just a bowel movement that he has not done? Has he been urinating?

I've moved this to the Pregnant Cat and Kitten Care section for you, hopefully you get some more answers.

Thanks so much for all the help. I was freaking out last night so I might not have given as much info as I should have.

Ive been trying to stimulate with warm cotton balls all over his little kitty parts and he really, really hates it. He squalls, squirms and claws.

I think I should have added that he seems fine otherwise! He pees just fine and after he eats, he just wants to purr and cuddle!
He even likes having his belly rubbed!

I wanted to add to this, since I forgot to mention it in my hurry last night, but when we were driving home from the vet yesterday morning I noticed he has some sticky whitish "goop" where he genitals are and I wiped it away but since then Ive noticed the same stuff stuck to his tail or around the area again when it comes time to stimulate him before his feed. Its not alot but I doubt its supposed to be there. I never noticed it before his vet visit so of course I didn't ask about it when he was in yesterday.

O btw, I don't know that its a male, (the vets office didnt tell me what its sex was), it just sounds better than "the kitten" doesn't it?

Try a really warm wash cloth. My 2 week old orphan wouldn't go very easily and then I used the warm water and washcloth and he went wonderfully.

Good luck. I am right there with you right now with nursing a 2 week old for the first time in my life. It is really a guessing game, isn't it?

Yay! Ive never been so excited to see poop in my life!! Today would have been the 6th day with no movements! We gave her alil bit of hairball remedy gel this morning, along with a few drops of veggie oil in her bottle this evening. I made sure the warm bottle in her sleeping box stayed comfortably warm and that she stayed near it all day, (she likes to lay on top of it :p). She still hadn't went though, so I took some advice I found on the internet and inserted the very tip of a well-lubed thermometor to try and stimulate her that way. After that we held her bottom half under a small stream of warm water and we stimulated her lil kitty parts and her belly at the same time. She got really, really loud and squirmy but it was worth it! That did the trick!!

I don't mean to be such a worrywart but I have a new question now, if anyone had any idea. She let go of about an inch of really hard, dark poo and some soft musturd colored stool afterwards. She didnt seem to be straining anymore after that either. I was just wondering if I should give her the hairball remedy and the stimulation under running water (which she hated, hated, hated) again tommorrow? I guess Im just still worried that she will die from constipation. Lol, is it ok to relax alil bit now?????

@StefanZ: Thanks for the link! The section for "sexing " your kitten was especially helpful, since I had no idea whether my "he" was really "he" or not....
it wasnt! I have a very cute lil lady!
@Everyone: Thanks so so so much for caring! I was starting to feel like it was hopeless to try and help her.

I see you did used every "trick of the trade" given. Where did you founded them? Esp this of hairball remedy gel...

Which; embarrassing, I do remember now I was commenting on once. Sorry I forgot, otherwise I myself would forward this tip to you. I mentionend liquid paraffine, I forgot about hairball gel (cat malt too; I think).
The solution there is - fanfares! - liquid paraffine! Thus, hair ball gel is the easiest way for common people to get hold of liquid paraffine...

Tx for reminding!

About your question: with a little luck, making her comfortable and some standard stimulation will be enough.
Otherwise, you will use some stronger battery for this.

Although, it may be her substitute milk who makes her a little hard?
So some change in there.... More watery, or some other brand...

If you can get hold of goat milk you can try with this. Some of our rescue-forumists are very happy with goat milk.

Last: the site I linked for was by our veteran forumist Hissy.

Good luck!
