Favorite scary movie/book? (Halloween!! :pumpkin:)

For all you horror fans out there... as Halloween is quickly going to be upon us, I thought I'd start a thread about our favorite scary books and movies.

I personally can't watch horror movies -- even the commercials set me on edge -- but I am a big Stephen King fan, and have read most of his books. I think my favorite is The Shining, although the more recent Lisey's Story was also excellent.

How about the rest of you TCSers?

I'm a Stephen King fan too. My favorite of his is The Long Walk. As for scary movie, I can't really pick one. Honestly, I don't find most "horror" movies to be scary at all. 90% of them are just "surprise horror" where things just jump out at you. That's not scary, it's just surprising.

I am so, SO sad that the Saw movies are finished and that there won't be a new one this year! They have become such a yearly staple for me!

LOVE horror movies, the more blood, guts and gore the better. Not too into horror books though.

We watched 'Wrong Turn 3' (Left for Dead) yesterday. If you like blood and guts then the Wrong Turn series is for you. We also watched ' Hobo with a Shotgun' yesterday. It stars Rutger Hauer, who also starred in "The Hitcher" which is one of my all time scary movies. It's right up there with 'The Thing', the one with Kurt Russell.

I love horror books. I can't pick a favorite. The Elementals (which I think is out of print), 'salem's Lot, and the Beast House Series are some that I have read over and over. The Shining is another favorite. It's hard for a book to scare me, but that one does. Pet Semetary is a little too scary for me. Oh, almost forgot Interview with the Vampire. Anne Rice writes so beautifully it's like poetry.

As far as horror movies, I love Jeepers Creepers (because the monster has a sense of humor) and Hostel II. And, of course, Halloween with Jamie Lee Curtis. I grew up with that one.

I only read Pet Sematary once. After that, no more.

I'm a child of the 70s and I would have to list The Exorcist and Rosemarys baby as my pick for scariest movies.

I used to LOVE (okay, and still do) those Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark books! The illustrations are so creepy.

I can't believe I forgot about those! I loved reading those when I was a kid. I had all three of them. I'm sure I still have them somewhere, but I have no idea where. I haven't read them for years.

OMG, I just have to say that your siggy is too cute!
Isn't that just the most awesome siggy?? Right after she posted that, I had to tell her, too. It is just adorable!!

Ahem, sorry. One of the scariest books I read was Christine by Stephen King. The movie rather scared the crap out of me, too. The Exorcist was excellent, too.

And I cannot forget Dawn of the Living Dead. One of my GFs was visiting with me the first time we saw it and when it was over and it was time for her to go home, she was afraid to get in her car alone. I laughed and agreed to take her home and we'd take care of her car the next day. Until I got her home and then....I didn't want to come home by myself! She ended up spending the night at my place. Now? The movie is camp. Then? It scared the crap out of us.

R.L. Stein's Goosebumps are my favorites. Read them growing up, and I still watch it on TV, lol.

but for a good horror, I enjoyed Ghost Ship. That really had me literally tensed and sitting at the edge of my seat.
Ghost Ship. That early sceen was terrifying. EUW..

Books, my faves are Kings 'It'. Long book, took me all summer to read it. At the end I felt like the characters were my friends. Second is Rice's 'Interveiw with the Vampire'. I liked Anne Rice for a while, but after a few years it went down hill for me. Like bad sequals.

I used to like Steven King, but then he got too weird, even for me.
Love Dean Koontz books.

This is going way way back -- but the original Psycho with Anthony Perkins was one of my favorites. To this day I still imagine sounds in the house when I take a shower!

A little off topic, but I went to a Superbowl party once and there was a guy there that had starred in one of the Living Dead movies. I certainly don't get invited to celebrity parties (and I'm not sure he was actually a celebrity) but he was quite intimidating. He wore a black turtleneck and the most serious expression. I kept my eye on him.

I really like to watch scary movies BUT then I just can't handle it . The worst movie to me was Chainsaw Massacre I don't think I have yet been able to watch the whole thing. Saw 5 almost made me vomit...... OMG it still haunts me to this day . I do love a good scary movie though . My most favorite is THE SHINING!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a ton of favorite horror movies, right now my favorite is The Children.

Books:
Swan Song by Robert McCammon
The Taking by Dean Koontz
Darkness by John Saul
Goosebumps & Fear Street series by R.L. Stine

Goosebumps! Oh yeah! Not really scary though... But still very creepy! Parents will never believe that there really is a monster. I too love the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. Those illustrations have always scared the heck out of me. As for movies, probably the scariest I've seen is The Ring. Other good ones are Pet Sematary- especially scary since my cat was wandering around outside at night while I watched it! It was fall and the wind was blowing leaves around to make it worse... Also try The Others. And The Innocents is great if you're more into psychological horror.

Favorite scary movie to watch: Halloween
Scary movie that I can't watch: The Exorcist (I saw it in the theater when it was released, and to this day I can't watch it)
Favorite scary book: I love Stephen King. The Shining was scary (the movie wasn't, IMO) The original Dracula by Bram Stoker is a really good read.

I love Halloween! Stephen King is one of my favorite authors too. I also like Dean Koontz although his books have gotten weird lately.
My favorite movie is The Shining (the Kubrick version) but I like a lot of horror movies like 28 Days Later, Ginger Snaps, Halloween, Final Destination, Let the Right One In, Nightmare on Elm Street(the original) etc...
My favorite horror novel, hmmm that's a tough one... There are too many. I really like a lot of King's anthologies though. So maybe one of those, like Skeleton Crew or Everything's Eventual. I also really like the anthology Soft and Others by F Paul Wilson.

I was also a big fan of RL Stine and Goosebumps when I was a kid. I still like to watch the TV shows when they rerun them.

I love those too, especially the illustrations but I always thought the drawings were way too creepy for kids' books!

Ok, let me explain The movie itself was scary, I agree (although there was a made-for-tv version starring Steven Weber that I thought was better). I just had a huge problem with Shelley Duvall; she was so wrong for that part. And I'm a big fan of her's; she just wasn't right for that movie.

Libby..Them are fight'in words! I think she was perfect for the role. A whimpy submissive who had to gather strength to get through it. And she did.

HAHAHA! I love that story!!!! My daughter was afraid to drive home alone after watching the final Harry Potter movie (she was afraid of Voldemort) so she stayed with a friend LOL.

I REFUSE to shower with an unlocked door. After I go through the bathroom looking for hidden guys dressed like their mom (we have a walk in closet in our bathroom)

OMG!!! WE WERE SEPARATED AT BIRTH!!! I have said that for YEARS...no one ever listens to me LOL. The whole point of Jack being so insecure was that his wife was GORGEOUS! Now Shelley Duvall is a great actress, but...gorgeous? Hmmm....

Those little ghost girls used to scare me when I was little. I still find them creepy

I just discovered Session 9. I really liked it. The Changeling is also one of the most scary movies I have ever seen. I am more scared by the supernatural than some hack and slash movie. I hated the Saw and Hostel movies.

My favorite horror author is Shirley Jackson. I am re-reading The Sundial now and it is a most wonderful book. We Have Always Lived in the Castle is another great one. Not horror in the ghost/slasher way but very, very good.

What is Session 9...book, movie, tv series? I'm the same way...supernatural is what freaks me out. I am in a musical group and there's a ghost in the church we practice in... LOL
