Hi there

Does anyone have any tried and true home remedies for toothache? I have an impacted wisdom tooth that is chipped and no dental coverage at the moment

I have found that mixing orajel and pure peppermint extract together boiled down helps a lot- but even that isnt working anymore

Any other ideas?

I have lidocaine gel which seems to help it just has to sit for awhile (or be injected into the gums)

Would welcome any advice,

PS Iv e had pain killer issues before, so i try to avoid it as much as possible! thanks

Mel

I might add that it only hurts when I have to clean it out i.e food particles etc down inside- thats when i need to numb it to clean it :-\\

Try vanilla extract. Pour some on a cotton ball and put it directly on the painful area for up to 30 seconds. It worked very well for me. I had to apply it a few times a day and it was effective for several days.

I hope it works for you!

Forget the home remedies and see the dentist! Home remedies are only temporary and visiting a dentist is a permanent cure.

I second Kookycat's suggestion. I had a friend who tried "remedies" and the infection spread to the next tooth, and she ended up losing them both! Also, the jaw is awfully close to the brain, and the brain doesn't like to get infected! In any case, the longer you wait, the more expensive the ordeal will become!

Hugs!

Absolutely. I know you said that you don't have dental coverage, but an impacted tooth is serious. That infection can spread and it will get really nasty for the rest of your mouth. It's not going to go away.

And, as CatMom2Wires says, the infection can spread to your brain, but eventually also to your heart, too.

You need to get the tooth repaired. The dentist will give you antibiotics to reduce the infection and swelling. And then do either a root canal or extract the tooth.

Either way, it's serious and you need to see a dentist. Is there a dental school close to you that you can go to? Often, you can get help there.

And this comes from somebody who was scared to death to see a dentist.

I saw the dentist and am saving up the $700 he wants to surgically extract it

Are you on antibiotics in the meantime? I figured that would be the outcome.
Sorry you are in pain but glad you are addressing it.

Enjoy some soft comfort foods in the coming days!

First hand experiance - Clove oil using an earbud to apply.

It will sting, and tastes horrible - but it will ease the pain and has slightly antiseptic qualities.

The same thing happend to me a few years ago, I landed up getting the dental surgeon to remove the tooth under local anaesthetic- cheaper, but not for the faint hearted!
