Meowing a lot!

Pita is a 10 year old neutered male. He's not a vocal type of cat and was never annoyingly vocal until we started keeping him inside full time a few months back.

He was indoor/outdoor, but our neighbors started feeding him and that made me uncomfortable (he's on special food for urinary tract infections and I don't know what they were feeding him, and he was getting fat! It was so noticable that the vet told us not to let him gain anymore weight), so he's 100% an indoor cat now.

Along with being indoors all the time, we started feeding him a little less, and he gets a small amount of food 4 or 5 times throughout the day, so I know he's getting enough to eat. He's at a healthier weight now and he's almost completely stopped throwing up his food, which he used to do almost every single day (I'm really happy about that!).

However, he now acts as though he were starving all the time! The meowing will go on for an hour at a time. I've tried using the squirt bottle to curb this behavior, but that doesn't seem to be working. I've tried playing with him, but he doesn't want to play with me, he wants food! He is not interested in toys, either.

He has been to the vet and they always say he's in very good health. He's actually there right now, getting his teeth cleaned, which I'm sure he's hating, poor boy.

I feel as though he needs more stimulation in his life, he has too much energy and is using it up by meowing a lot throughout the day and into the night. My husband and I have come up with 2 courses of action: either let him run around outside again, or get another cat that he can interact with. We are not fully committed to either option, though I think I like the idea of him being outside again more.

I don't really know if getting another cat would work out, since Pita is not particularly playful and may not interact with the new feline. We cannot do nothing though, he is slowly driving me crazy

Any ideas on getting kitties to stop constantly crying for food?

Do you feed him dry food? If so, there are ways you can slow down his intake and make the food last longer. Put ping pong balls in the bowl so he has to eat around them. That could make his food last longer.

I have a kitty I walk on a leash, is that a possibility? It will get him out and hopefully tire him a bit.

How about an outside enclosure? There are all kinds out there. Try Drs Foster and Smith. I get their catalog and there are some real nice, safe enclosures. My husband made our kitties one that they can enter from the house and they spend lots of time out there.

How about some window bird feeders to keep him amused?

But, I would def not let him roam free again. You obviously care very much about him. So many hazzards for kitties that roam free. You don't ever want to say "if only I hadn't let him back out".

I am sure others will come along with other suggestions.

In addition to the excellent advice above, I recommend a trip to the vet with blood work, blood pressure reading and a urine check.

Since he was getting food he's not supposed to have, he could be having a flare up of his urinary tract problem. You probably already know that can turn very serious, even fatal if he blocks, in males very quickly and suddenly.

In addition, excessive unusual meowing is a symptom of some diseases such as hyperthyroid and high blood pressure.

Please don't spray him any more. He's trying to communicate to you that something is wrong. Whether he's sick, or just unhappy being kept in, spraying him is not helpful and will only cause more stress, making him worse.

Please keep us posted on your beloved boy.
