I have a cat about 5yrs old, she was an adoptive cat , and she is wonderful.. About a year ago we found out she has thyroid disease, so she has been on meds daily and has seemed to do well..
This past month she started with diarrhea, we had her stool checked , no parasites, we had blood work done , kidneys and liver okay, we had an xray done of her tummy and they said she had some inflammation. Since then she has been on antibiotics and chicken and rice, well she seems to do okay for a day or too and then diarrhea all over again.. now the dr is talking prednisone, but he has said he doesnt want to do that because it can raise their blood pressure , affect the kidneys or liver.. so whats to do ?? Today all over diarrhea.. I am so upset ,we take her in to the vet pretty much weekly , she hasnt lost any weight thank goodness since this started.. any one with any ideas.. please ??

i probably won't be a lot of help, but i have a 16 yr old osci/siamese and she has had thyroid problems for about 7 yrs now, but we do not and have not had her on any medication for it. She is still very active and is sooo loving still. she is a tiny cat small boned and maybe weighs about 3 pounds but she seems happy still.. yes my old girl is up there and it will soon be time to make that dreaded decision we all hate to make, but as long as she is happy and still active we will keep her around, she eats wet only now as she has hardly any teeth, but still drinks her water and is fine every where else.. so just to let you know maybe some cats don't need the medication..

I dont have a problem giving her the medication for the thyroid condition, we love her, it costs about 39.00 a month.. but she has done well . we take her in for lab work every 4-6 months to check her thyroid and her weight.. this diarrhea thing has me worried.. I am afraid if they put her on the prednisone that will be the beginning of the end.. I cant keep her on the chicken and rice forever .. it doesnt seem to help any.. and if the antibiotics were working I would think it would have helped by now.. I am sick over this.. every day .. constantly checking to see what she has done .. and boiling chicken and rice.. and seeing her not happy when I put it down in front of her.. very sad

Antibiotics upset the gut flora/fauna, causing loose stools, they kill both the bad and the good bacteria.
You can try adding a probiotic, spacing at least four hours between it and the antibiotic.
Food allergies and intolerance can also cause loose stool.
I would suggest a limited ingredient food and see if that helps.
But, as long as she is on an antibiotic, you will likely see the loose stools continue.

Just so you know, a course of Prednisone is not that bad. I've never heard of it causing high blood pressure. A few of my cats over the years have been on a few weeks of Prednisone (of course you must wean them off it slowly, as Vet will advise; never just stop it abruptly!) for various things (allergies, one for unexplained diarrhea when nothing else worked) and there were no problems at all and it really helped with no negative effects at all. The one cat had diarrhea that nothing helped with; not antibiotics, not change in diet, nothing.....but a few weeks of Prednisone (tapering off it slowly) worked very well.

What do you feed your cat? Sometimes companies change the ingredients in a food without us knowing (they slightly change the formulation) and something in it just might not agree with the cat. Sometimes things like corn, grains, fillers.

Canned pure pumpkin (not the pie filling but the pure canned pumpkin without spices) is good for diarrhea as it's full of fiber. Very bland and easily mixed into canned food. A tablespoon or so.

Slippery Elm Bark capsules (can order them online like at iHerb.com)....one 370mg capsule sprinkled into food a day, very good for diarrhea, soothes the digestive tract, has no taste. I've used it before in cats w/ diarrhea or upset tummy.

Are you sure your cat's thyroid levels are okay and dose of thyroid med doesn't need to be adjusted? meaning....if levels are off and cat's hyperthyroidism is no longer being controlled well on the current dose, that can cause diarrhea?
