so I went to petsmart yesterday looking for the wellness cubed in a can, but they didn't have it but they did have the new wellness chunks in the packages so i bought 4 of them.. Wet feeding time came and i put a little of the new with the FF and what do you know he ate it.. Same thing this morning and the great thing is cynder seemed really excited to eat it.. I tapped the plate and he was meowing and jumping at me, So i put it down and he went to town on it. Now mind you it was only about a teaspoon of mixed FF and wellness but he seems to be getting back on the wet.. i am going to stick to my routine of a little wet in the morning and at night with dry food down during the day,and gradually increase the wellness and the portion size so hopefully he will be up to a half a pouch in the morning and half at night.. question though how much dry should i put down for him? I currently put 2/3 cup dry daily for him and some days he eats like a pig and need to put another 1/3rd in is that too much dry????

For a cat under a year old that is "healthy" unlimited good quality dry (you are using that) is fine. What your putting down around his "eating pattern" sounds acceptable to me.

As always, speak to a veterinarian for a definitive answer. As I am not nor are any members to my knowledge a licensed veterinarian.

If you are putting down wet as well, 2/3 cup dry is wayyyy too much. My 22 lb cat didn't even eat that much when I first got him. The amounts were kind of crazy because I'd give in to his begging sometimes, but here they are:
4/6 - 1/4th cup dry 1/4th can
4/7 - 1/4th cup dry < 1/2 can
4/8 - 1/16th cup dry < 1/2 can
4/9 - wet only
4/10 - > 1/4th dry < 1/8th can
4/11 - 1/16th dry < 1/2 can
4/12 - 3/16th dry < 1/2 can

Obviously different cats have different needs, but unless your cat is running marathons, there is no need for so much food. I would slowly reduce dry down to 1/2 cup, stay there for a while and then go down to 1/4th.

Glad you found a food he likes though.

O____O This sounds like the perfect way to turn a healthy cat into an obese one...

Sorry, didn't know your cat was only 5 months. If he is not overweight he can eat as much as he wants. Sorry for the confusion. >__<

Wesley and Buttercup had unlimited access as kittens. I think it goes stale though if you just put a huge heap out, so best to just top it off occasionally.

On a related note, I never understood why pouched cat food isn't the norm over canned. Cans get damaged, are expensive, and require more processing. Granted you can't cook the food in a pouch as you can post canning, but irradiating is cheap and safe but some uninformed consumers get antsy about the term I think. Oh well, good news either way!

I think the reason is that pouched food has so much moisture that you end up having to feed so much more to get the same nutrition as a can, as well as some cheaper pouches contain an ingredient not healthy for cats. Unfortunately google is not helping me find out what that ingredient is. Oh and they aren't recyclable.
