Allergies in Cat

One of our cats, Ranger, has the sniffles. The snot, in lamest terms is clear. The vet did give him a steroid, but he has a weak immune system so he has to be on a antibiotic to prevent a infection popping up. The steroid did help, for about a week. Now the sniffling ins back. *sigh* we have been giving him benidril, with the dosage the vet recommended, but the benidril seems to not work as well. Wondering if it is worth him having the sniffles until allergy season is over or risking his health with a steroid. I am in a slight confusion on what to do. None of the other cats are sick, so I am about 99.99% sure it is not a illness. Thank you ahead for comments.

The below allergy pills are very good for any kind of allergy or inflammation.

I give them to my foster cat that has feline aids and is allergic to certain foods due to his weakened immune system. It has anti-inflammatory ingredients and includes vitamin C too. It comes in capsule form and can be sprinkled on your kitty's wet food. My boy cat takes 1/2 capsule per day and it is beef/liver flavored and he has no problem with the taste. Cats with weakened immune systems do often have skin or other allergies and that is probably why your vet gave him a steroid shot and the benadryl.

Either way, if you want to continue giving Ranger the antibiotic to suppress an infection, and if you want to help him with allergies but not have him on steroids, then I highly recommend the above allergy pills. The ingredients are listed on the site, they are all anti-inflammatory, and as I said, my foster kitty has not needed any steroid shots since taking the pills. Also the vitamin C boosts his immune systerm.

You need to find out what is triggering his allergies. It could be something as basic as food, litter, a cleaner you use, a detergent or soap, a plastic or rubber, a material/fiber such as cotton, wool, or even a synthetic........

I was going to say that too, but I didn't want to add more confusion.

I agree, will help Ranger a lot if you can carefully observe him and see if you can figure out what is causing the sniffles. Cats more often react to allergies by itching than sneezing, but they can definitely also react by sneezing etc.

The most common allergy is to fleas and flea dirt, followed by food allergies. Here is a good article to look at. Can you describe whether he has any other symptoms other than sniffles? Are his eyes clear? Is he sneezing? By sniffles, do you just mean his nose is runny?

He didn't start having sniffles until we opened up the windows. We live right next to a corn feild that is being harvested right now. He does snizze and his eye did run clear yesterday, but yet again we had opened the window the night before. He has many upper respitory infections and when the vet last saw him she said that it was just in his nose and no where else. She has had us do nebulzer treatments before. But since we do not own our nebulzer it gets pretty costly and we have to borrow it from them.

I would give him the anti inflammatory allergy pills because they will help to boost Ranger's immune system and they are not steroids. You can sprinkle half a capsule on his wet food. They contain vitamin C and will help to keep his nasal passages from reacting to whatever it is that is bothering him. One bottle costs $19 and if you gave him a half capsule a day it would last six months.

It sounds like this poor little guy is very sickly. Why is his immune system so depressed? poor baby, I hope he is ok.

The only thing the doctor and I can figure is he was taken from his mother too early and that he could get her antibodies. He was also very sick when we adopted him from the shelter. To the point where I had to hand feed him to keep him alive. He has been tested for fiv/lukemia and came back negative. Our poor baby needs lost of work and love from us. He still suckles almost 2 times a day and he is almost 2 years old.

Awww poor baby! What the heck is he suckling with? He can't still be hanging on his mom lol. Maybe you should get the animal vitamins on that site instead of the allergy pills!

Hegets upper respitory infections REALLY bad. The last time we figured it out that it was a bacteria in his muscle tissue. And he got better then this started. If it was clear I would jump on it being another upper resiperatory infection. I will probably set hi? Up another vet appointment and get her thoughts on the pill you suggested. She is a great vet! Lol she puts so much love in for our cats.

I would talk with the vet and voice your concerns. It's definitely a valid worry if your kitty has a weak immune system. In this situation I would want to rely on the vet's opinion of whether or not he is healthy enough to handle the shots regularly. If the vet says it's okay, then I would agree.
