Well, I pre-ordered the Kindle Fire, figuring I can cancel if I decide I want to go another way.

And one other way would be to buy a used (or even new) Nook Color. I've been doing some research. Rooting the Nook can make it into a pretty good tablet. It has a slot for an SD card. And you can find them for less than $150.

You can get a new Nook Color for "just" $225 (that's $25 off) if you buy a Barnes & Noble membership (for $25). In addition, right now, you can get a certified pre-owned Nook Color for $179.

In addition, the Nook currently can get a couple of the magazines I want, and the Kindle can't, at least right now. I imagine that will change in the coming months.

Any comments?

I looked at the Nook color, but I don't really want all the bells and whistles. All I wanted was something to read books on, and I really like the basic B&W Nook. I haven't seen the Kindle (I guess the color isn't out yet), but the Nook seems pretty cool if you want all that extra stuff. With the Nook, you get free books every Friday - I don't know if Kindle has anything similar.

I have a kindle and LOVE it!!!! i didn't want all the extras and it has been perfect for me.. its simple to download books, the only draw back is because i live in canada some titles haven't been given permission for release to us so i can't always get the books i want when i want them, but otherwise i really like..

I just came across something I had heard nothing about. Lenovo has come out with a tablet with specs very close to the Kindle Fire and the Nook Color, with about the same price, but it really has very good specifications when it comes to operating system, etc. It's called the Lenovo A1.

The big drawback for the Nook color to me was the battery life. I hardly charge my kindle and i read for at least a few minutes every day. Now if I do a long browsing session with the wi-fi sure I have to charge it sooner. But for the most part that battery life has been amazing. I love being 'wireless' with it. Plus the weight was lighter. If you read for a long time; that makes a difference.

If you do end up with the Fire; let me know what you think! My Mom thinks they might want one for Christmas.

The wifi on any e-reader is a horrible drain on battery life. When I read, I read for more than an hour at a clip. I keep the wifi off on my nook color if I'm not shopping with it, and hardly ever need to charge it. I like the options and bells and whistles. I did use them alot when we were camping.

I have a post-it note on both the doors in my house, saying "Turn off phone wi-fi!" Mine isn't too bad (Motorola Atrix), but Dottie's will go dead before she gets off work if it's fully charged when she leaves.

I dont know if its just because Im cheap or what but Im all for Kindle. I am starting to save up for a basic one. I dont want a ton of bells and whistles or whatever. I just want it to read my books and get books off the library. No color no all touch screen just a standard regular ole black Kindle.

I did figure out the lending thing from the library. However to use it on a phone (like I currently do) the program is not good...it needs a major update to work well. Its Overdrive Media Console and you just save your librarys lending site and then log into your account and look for books. Its really easy. BUT the actual program itself is ridiculously slow. It takes a big to flip the pages and then it has to load pages so its obnoxious. But I can not do Kindle lending thru my library without it being a huge hulabaloo....this was my arguement to get a Kindle. LOL once I showed DF how bad it actually was compared to my Kindle app he relented...plus I showed him how cheap the Kindle actually was..since he can drop $400 on a tool then I can spend $130 on a 'tool' for myself. LOL

Well, you know, you can get a new basic Kindle for just $80, now, right?

The funny thing is the old versions don't get really cheap on e-bay. Well, I DID see a "brand new" 1st generation Kindle for about $60. The great thing about the first generation is they have the free 3G, and the battery is easily replaceable, something you can't do on the newer versions.

I just checked the "sold" listings on e-bay, and they're going for $36 to as much as $100, but mostly in the $50-$60 range. They are very simple, one charge on the battery lasts a looooooooooooong time, and they work very well. You can add an sd memory card, and it will hold an immense amount of reading material. It doesn't display magazines well, and any illustrations in books will be in black and white, but other than that, it does a great job.

In fact, I have one sitting here on my desk. The only problem is I can't find the charger for it!

Last night, I won a Nook Color on e-bay for about $160, with shipping. It's a rooted version, but I may restore it to original condition because some rooted versions can't display magazines properly. But it's possible to "dual boot" the Nook Color, allowing it to boot normally from the internal memory or as a tablet from an installed micro sd.

And, as I said, the new Kindle Fire has some real drawbacks. For one thing, you can't add memory to it. And you have to be somewhere with a wi-fi connection to use any of the streaming features of the "cloud" storage that Amazon is touting.

It looks to me like the 16gb version of the Lenovo A1 table for $250 may be the big bargain. You can install both the Kindle and Nook apps, AND have a great little computer with you.

Now is when you wait for all the "fan boys" to go out and buy the brand new just off the shelf versions! You may be able to find a Kindle version 3 for less than you can get the new one. Although the new price is not bad at all if you dont mind a few ads!

I dont give a hoot about gen 1 gen 2 anything like that I want three things. It to be black, not be all touch screen, have 3g. If it has all three of those and its cheap Im a happy camper. The only reason I am adament about 3g is because I have literally zero access to wifi in the places that I go to where I will take the Kindle with me. Also since it runs of the Sprint network (and AT&T towers in my area) that means service is going to be bad enough. Those are the two worst providers in my area unless your smack dab in the center of town. But at my house and the other two houses I go to it will work.

Im definately getting a Kindle though. I cant wait because its been on the one day I want list foreverrrrrrr. Im so glad it went from that list to the actual saving up to buy list. Im not in any rush for it either but I know that if I have to wait for tax money to get it then Im getting one of the fancier pants ones. LOL

All the first generation Kindles had 3g. But I also think they're all white. They will hold more than you'll ever read, probably, too.

I have a Sony reader, and I love it. You can charge it right on your computer, but it hardly ever needs it. Now if I can just get it back from dh, I will be happy. It cost me $80 off a yard sale site, but it was still sealed in the box.

I love my Kindle. I have a 3rd generation (the current type), I got it for Christmas. The free 3G is a big plus because I don't have internet or anything on my phone so if I need to look something up online I can just use my Kindle.
If Kindle Fire had free 3G I would definitely buy it.
