I'm worried about my kitten. He's almost 6 months old and this past Monday (tomorrow will be one week) he was neutered and received his first series of distemper vaccinations.

He was fine for the first few days, but Friday he wouldn't eat at all but we didn't really notice anything else seeing as he was pretty active. Friday night however, he vomited. Today we got him to eat a small portion of chicken and drink a small amount of water. He also slept all day practically. This evening he vomited again. (the vomit was liquid yesterday kind of yellowish and today kind of pinkish) after that though I played with him and he was quite active for about 90 minutes. Then he laid down again and again is sleeping.

I checked his incision where he was neutered and there appears to be a bit of dried blood not a lot but there is no redness or swelling. Could this possibly be side effects of an infection starting? Or maybe a delayed reaction to the actual neuter? I've read that cats get depressed afterwards. Or maybe a delayed reaction to the distemper vaccination?

His nose has been crusty lately but he's been known to get a crusty nose even from when we first got him.

Any advice would be appreciated.
I had him neutered at the anti cruelty society in Chicago where I live and I do plan to call them first thing Monday seeing as they are not open on Sunday. I just thought I'd try here and see if anyone has ever experienced this and could give me some input. Kind of freaking out here.

Thank you.

Instead of waiting till Monday, I would get him to an actual vet on Sunday. It doesn't sound like an infection, but who knows what it could be. Better safe than sorry.

I appreciate the advice but I'm very particular about who I take my cats to. I have 3 and they have all been going to society or their affiliates. The only vet that is open on a Sunday charges 100 dollars just for an exam. I really would like to avoid that, but if he worsens I suppose I won't have another choice. I just wanted to try my luck here to see if anyone else ever had this happen to their cat post neuter. Thank you for the suggestion!

Yes, I think you're doing all you can by getting him to the vet. If he's playing with you he must not be in any immediately life-threatening danger; you would know if he was.

Try to continue feeding him and giving him water. If he refuses and becomes very dehydrated, the vet will give him sub-cutaneous fluids tomorrow when you take him in.

Welcome to TCS and good luck with your baby

Did he get some vaccinations concurrent with the neuter? The rabies vaccination often causes cats to be a little uncomfortable for a day or two. Does he seem to have a fever?

speakhandsforme thank you for the warm welcome. It's appreciated.

mrblanche yes, he received hid first series of distemper vaccinations.
No fever, cold and wet nose.

This morning I woke up and now both of my boys aren't eating. Ahhhhhh! What's happening lol. My older boy is like 6 years old and now he won't eat either. I'm starting to think I have a mutiny on my hands.

Thank you all for your help and the warm welcome so far. I've been looking for a good cat forum and I think I finally found one

Did you just open a new bag of cat food? Change flavors? Get a new supply of soft food?

But the single likeliest (and, I would bet, correct) explanation is that your boy caught a cold at the vet's, and it has now spread to your adult.

That is quite possible. They are both eating now but very little. To be safe, I am going to take both of them to the society in the morning. Thank you all for your help
it's greatly appreciated. As for diet, no I haven't changed anything. I'm still feeding them both the same food.

I hope it turns out to be a cold and that both your babies get better very soon. I would suggest, though, that you take some time to interview e-vets and find one you're comfortable with. There are times where we simply cannot wait for our regular vet to open. I've been there.

Believe me, while $100 seems a lot for the initial charge, when it's 2:00 am on a Sunday, that seems like a tiny amount for professional help right when you need it. I'm sure the Chicago society can recommend more than one e-vet to you. We're blessed in the Chicago area - lots of vets, and e-vets, are in our area. Good luck to you!

It sounds like a reaction to the distemper shot, where (just like people) after the shot you may get very slight symptoms of illness and be sluggish. As the other poster said, as long as he is overall drinking water normally and playing, albeit less, he is ok IMO.
I also agree with the other poster, it could be that your kitty picked up something at anti-cruelty, just like a people-hospital, it is easy to get something and his immune system could be lowered with the vaccinations.
