Chiquita got spayed...

The vet told me she doesn't need to return to remove stitches, because they used skin glue. I'm told to keep the "huge" collar for 10 days, but she can't eat with it, so I'm taking it off for her meals but putting it right back on. I feel bad because I'm keeping her separate from her buddies, Mojo and Dusky, and she is mostly locked up in a room. The thing that's worrying me is that whenever I go to see her she stretches a LOT. Doesn't that hurt her??? Also the pain medication they gave me to give to her..well, that's another problem. I'm not sure any of it is getting into her system. It's the liquid stuff, but she just spits it out. I'm worried she is in pain, but I can't tell. I'm keeping my other 2 cats away from her until she heals.

In my humble opinion it is good you are keeping her separated for now. That will prevent her from "doing too much". The Elizabethan collar is very important in this case because it prevents her from licking the wound, hence possibly opening it up.

I am not sure exactly what you mean by stretching a lot. But if she is moving around, not in a ball she is most likely okay. But if you are worried speak to the veterinarian.

As far as the pain medication goes, all I can recommend is ask the veterinarian for the same medication but in a pill form.

Is the pain medication they gave you metacam? Just wondering, because that's what the low-cost clinic gave me for Boots when I got him neutered last week.

If they gave you liquid metacam for pain relief, I would NOT -- repeat, NOT -- give it to her. It can cause renal failure very quickly.

Obviously not, otherwise she probably wouldn't do it. Pain is a message that says, "You know that thing you just did? Don't do it again."

I think you're right not to take all this lightly, but I suspect things aren't as bad as they might seem. Our Bonnie had stitches and no collar (I'm not recommending you discard Chiquita's collar), and gave us heart attacks by climbing bookcases the day after her operation; but none of the stitches burst and even the vet was impressed at how well everything had healed. Your mileage, it's important to stress, may vary. We had been given a painkiller for her, but didn't use any of it -- in fact, we would have preferred her to have been in some pain because she was, as I say, climbing bookcases.

When Hannah was spayed, they used internal stitches that dissolved and skin glue. I never put a collar on her and just kept an eye on her incision. She was a bit loopy the first night, but after that, she was fine. I'd say leave the collar off, don't give her pain meds, and let her go. Keep an eye on her incision site for swelling, excessive redness, and any oozing or opening up of the incision.

Actually the medication they gave me is called Buprenorphine. Is that one OK?

Is she in pain? I wouldn't give it to her unless she's in pain. I've had 3 cats spayed or neutered in the past several years, and they've never sent me home with pain meds.
