Potty training

Don't know if I've mentioned this here before, but Boots and Kramer are getting potty trained

They've been doing really well so far. I used the following method:

1. Move their litter box to sit beside the toilet
2. Raise it a little every day until it's level with the toilet
3. Take away the box and put a bowl that's big enough to rest on the rim of the toilet with some litter inside the toilet
4. Scoop away a bit of the litter each day
5. When there's no more litter left, fill it with a little water
6. Increase the amount of water each day until the bowl is almost full
7. Remove the bowl, leave the toilet lid open so they'll use the toilet

They breezed through steps 1-4 without a hitch in about two weeks. But today I finally scooped out the last tiny bit of litter and filled it with one inch of water. Boots immediately went into the bathroom to see what the deal was. He hopped up onto the toilet, smelled the bowl, tried to figure out how to balance himself on the toilet... and then gave up, jumped down, and peed in the empty litterbox that I had stupidly left in the bathroom.

I had only had the box in there because I was afraid Boots would need it after his neuter surgery on Tuesday (he didn't). I just forgot to take it back out, and they had both ignored it until now. So while he was still in the bathroom watching me, I poured the pee from the litter box into the bowl in the toilet, so he knows where it went and so he can wrap his mind around the concept of peeing in the water bowl. I'm going to compromise and put a 1/4 cup of litter back into the bowl with the water, and if that doesn't work, I'll remove the water and go back to decreasing amounts of litter. I also removed the litter box, obviously

Does anyone else toilet train their cats? Any advice? Just curious. My brother also toilet trains his cats.

Hmm.. I don't know if I would fill the bowl with water. That probably made him associate it with a water bowl and well, he's not going to pee in what he drinks out of.
I would just go from litter to no litter instead of water. Also maybe when you get down to only a cup of litter left, leave it that way for a week before going down to nothing.

I trained 3 using the Litter Kwitter which are rings with an enlarging hole until you just have the toilet seat

Apparently a lot of cats need to back track, slowly, slowly is the way to go

Went back to trays when we started breeding since it's not practical in that situation
