Hi all,

So I'm a relative newbie to the whole "grain-free" thing and cat nutrition in general. Just looking for some general advice, and also an opinion on this Publix brand canned food.

Reading the ingredients list of Publix Gourmet Cat Food, Turkey & Giblets 3 oz, I see nothing like corn/corn gluten/wheat or anything that to me would indicate a grain. The can doesn't say grain-free, but is it possible that it could be? The first five ingredients are turkey, liver (from what?? a turkey??), meat by-products, water sufficient for processing, poultry giblets. Then it goes on to list all the chemicals and vitamins and things in it. Under "guaranteed analysis," it says crude protein 11%, crude fat 5%, and crude fiber 1.5%. And also, Ash (like ashes from a fire???), 3.0%.

Needless to say, I would love to feed my cats the very best food, but I'm a student with no job, thus money is tight to say the least. I free feed them 9Lives Total Care, which I know the grain-free and raw foodies will flip at, but they have no health problems whatsoever (not even weight problems from the free feeding) and they seem to like it, and by that I mean they eat it. I know that that kind of food can cause problems down the road, though, so for now I will finish the bag and then try to find something a bit better for them that's still affordable.

I only feed them the Publix canned food for a special treat, or if I'm in a particularly good mood. But they love it.

If you could type out the ingredients it would be a big help. (A pain, I know, but the only way we can evaluate properly.)

As far as 'liver', no it's not necessarily from a turkey, it could be from anything. That's why its important to find meats that are named.

or a link if you find it on a website...

remember many other grains exist- rice , quinoa , oats are now common ... Even most grain containing wets are high in protein ( rough guess is the dry matter is about 50-55% protein on this food) as the solids are usually meat ( a few out there that are not)...
