Remember our e-reader discussion?

A lot of us said we wanted one, but were putting it off for various reasons. I mentioned that I heard one expert said that the low-end versions were likely to get down in the "disposable electronics" price category by this Christmas and were likely to be one of the hottest items for Christmas.

Welcome to today. I'm sure you saw the announcement of the new Amazon Fire, a 7-inch screen tablet meant to compete head-to-head with the B&N Nook Color, give the I-pad trouble, etc. And they announced at the same time a basic b&w Kindle reader for only $79.

What do YOU think?
I personally am not interested in any of those. I still prefer to read a book the old-fashioned way. If they were giving them away free I would probably not want one.
I still prefer my iPad because I can get books from any of the retailers who sell their proprietary hardware- Amazon, B&N, Borders (called Kobo), and of course the iBooks/iTunes store. I'm sure any Android-based tablet can do the same, like the Galaxy Tab. I also prefer the iPad because it can read many file formats, whereas sometimes the others are limited- I had a Sony Reader that just gave me fits about file formats!

I have a nook color. I LOVE it. I take it everywhere with me, and there's an advantage that I don't think Amazon kindles can do...borrow from the library!

I take out 5 books a week, for free, and as I return them, get more, for free!

While i like the feel of a book in my hands, space and money saved is worth it with the nook color.

I also have wifi, etc..so it's like a tablet when I have wifi turned on.

Drink the kooooolaiiiide..... get an eeeeeereader......

I still love my Kindle and use it daily! My Mom wants me to check into their new tablet for her. She and my Step-dad think its what they want to get each other for Christmas this year. (One to share)

The only thing I'm waiting on is for my magazines subscriptions to be available on them.

I thought of you when I heard about the Fire, Mike, since it's supposed to be good for magazines. It looks promising, but unfortunately doesn't have 3G, which is great when you're traveling.

If Amazon comes up with a hybrid, i.e., a tablet that also offers e-ink, with WiFi and 3G, I'll be tempted. My Kindle II is fine until then.

@resqchick: You can now borrow from libraries with the Kindle.

September 22 was the date public libraries and Kindles started working together...I've already borrowed and returned about five books. Easy peasy.

Ahhh. Ok. I know you used to not be able to-which was one reason I went with nook color.

I have magazines on the nook too. I don't know if you can transfer your paper sub to e-reader sub though.

They never combine ALL the good features in one thing. It's like phones, you have to choose what's more important to you, and I want IT ALL!!

I have a kobo. I like it, but I don't use it very often. I need to get new glasses so that I don't get headaches so much when reading.

Can you adjust the size of the font? I enlarge it on the Kindle when I'm reading in bed and don't have my contacts in.

I used to think that too. Until I took it on Vacation and finished 5 books and only had to pack something that would fit into a small purse rather than lug 5 books with me on a 12 hour trip...
Some books I still buy, but 99% of them I get on my Kindle.
I havent tried to rent from the library yet, only because I have a huge list of books to read on my kindle already!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE my Kindle. it is the Kindle 3g. I very rarely use it for browsing the web (Mostly because I have a smart phone) but I have used it for places that my cell has gotten crappy signal, but the kindle was doing just fine!

I would love to have a Kindle, mainly because I'm running out of room in my house for books. I think Santa may bring me a Kindle this year, but not sure.

While I would rather hold an actual book in my hands when I'm reading, I simply don't have book room anymore. And when I go away, I think a Kindle would be handier.

My sister is a librarian in the Oklahoma City Public Library system, and she says they have lots of e-reader content available.

I'm still happy with my basic Sony reader. In the two years that I have had it I've bought only two books. All the rest I downloaded free from the web.

It's basic and has to be hooked to my computer to download the books but I still love it.

At the moment it is hooked to my USB charging. I have 26 books on it and will add more when it is done.

There are so many "classic" and older books out there that I have not read. So far most of them have been great. Who knew that a book written in 1864 would be so interesting?

You have to buy the books for them don't you? I don't buy books anymore. I used to download music to my computer but now that it isn't free anymore (limewire), I don't get any more music.

as far as I know, all the e-readers have access to free books (either classics or, in Amazon's case, whole flocks of free books that change pretty frequently). And, now, of course, Kindle has joined the crowd so you can borrow from your public library.

I've bought two books for my kindle - but have read well over 50 since I got it last February (and I usually read on the train - I still get, and enjoy, 'regular' books from the library or my own collection).

Why would you need 3G? Don't you have a USB port on your computer?

There are a lot of free books available from various sources. I just had my sister check the catalog at her library system, and they currently have almost 8,000 books available. You CAN download music on them and listen, too. At least, on the newer ones.

I caved in over the summer and bought a Nook. I looked at Kindle, but liked the Nook better. I'm really loving it, and reading a lot more than I used to before I got it. I just got the basic reader, all I want to do with it is read.

I'm on the fence about getting an e-reader of any kind. Mainly because the only place I really have a chance to read is at work (I work in a call center and there can be a LOT of down time between calls. It's allowed to read, do crafts, etc). However, they no longer allow electronic devices such as e-readers, i-pods, etc to be used at our desks due to security reasons, so it would probably be a waste of money for me. Of course, if someone (other than my husband) gave me one I certainly wouldn't turn it down. When I think about all the books available I just

Are the books available new releases or old books? I read so much that I usually am waiting for the next book by my favourite authors and I would guess those new releases are not free.

you can get them free... Although most of the books I have been buying are less than $2 each. Amazon has a very large selection of bargain books and have specials every day/week/month it just depends on what you have! You can also borrow some books from friends, but they only last 2 weeks and you can only borrow once. Most new books are the same or less as the hardbacks.

I never thought I'd lie an e-reader, but then our library leant them out to all staff to try and it was actually kind of cool. The only reason don't have one yet? They aren't cheap in Canada and ~$150 is more than our frivolities budget can handle at the moment...if the price comes down here, though, it's a definite Christmas present idea.

I LOVE my Kindle and I have pre-ordered the Kindle Fire. I was almost drooling when looking at the darn thing online. We already have an Amazon Prime membership, so I will be able to stream just about anything!!!!!! The lack of 3G is a no issue for me, house is Wi-Fi and most of the places I frequent also have Wi-Fi.

Amazon is not trying to compete with IPad and thats where the techoheads get their reviews loused up. The specs on the Fire look pretty good (hubby is a hardware god, it is what he does for a living). One just has to remember that at its heart, it is an ereader and it comes packaged with some nice extras.

I am so looking forward to November 15th (Fires release date) and November 16th, the day mine will arrive at the fabulous husbands office and he will bring it home all set for me to sit down and read!!! He is moving the content from JG (yes the Kindle has a name LOL) to the upgraded version so I dont have to.
btw, Calibre makes content from any source useable. Download it!!!

People whined about how Kindle did not use epub...no need to worry with this program.

Being a writer myself, I've been resisting getting an ereader, even though both of my books are available for nearly every ereader out there (mostly through the website I'll mention shortly). I've put the basic $79 kindle on my Amazon wishlist now. Why, you may ask? 1: the price is decent; 2: I can put my non-fiction books on it. I still kinda prefer my fiction in my hands; 3: I can then get rid of most of my non-fic books and make more room for a cat tree in my dinky apartment. Also (okay, #4): my school bookstore, along with many others, has started selling/renting textbooks to e-books. I'd much rather carry a lightweight Kindle or other ereader around than a bunch of heavy books.

Now, the website I mentioned: www.smashwords.com ... A lot of writers like myself put their books up there, for ALL formats... even Kindle, and at decent prices... my books on there are about $5. It gets my name out there. A lot of other books are on there as well. It's a great website for ereaders...

Now I just need one. Maybe Santa will find me this year...

I got the 3rd generation kindle last year for Christmas and I absolutely love it. They have hundreds of free books as well. Most of the free ones are the classics but I love the classics so its all good. :-) The free books are nice because if you're on a tight buget like I am, you can't always spare $4-9 on a book. I have probably about 80 books on my Kindle right now and I think only about 7 are books I paid money for, the rest are the free ones.
I admit that I do love reading actual physical books BUT you can only carry so many on you at a time. I love the Kindle's battery life AND storage capacity. Plus they have the free Kindle apps for your computer or smart phone which makes it nice if you happen to forget your kindle at home. Its also nice that all your kindle books that you've bought are saved on your amazon account, so if you do ever run out of room on your kindle, you can delete books off your kindle without worrying about loosing them forever.

I get TONS of books for free and there are always new ones popping up not just classics or random books noone would really read. I also love that I can get books that dont really come out in print or come out on ebook first before being printed. Having my Kindle app also gave me access to quite a few new authors I wouldnt have bought in paperback. The downside, I got hooked on a series from a little novella that I got for free........I ended up absolutely having to have the rest of the series...at that point there were 10 books in it and its not done. Im currently waiting on book 12 which comes out in December. The nice thing is I can preorder them and they come right on my phone the day its released. I still get actual books though. But I only buy Nora Roberts to keep on my shelf. I also like that most books I get are only like $4. Especially the old Zebra historicals.

Because if Im going somewhere I dont want to have to cart my computer AND Kindle around just to look for free books or buy books. Its a pain in the butt viewing the book selection on my computer, Ive tried it and hate it. Especially since almost daily Im finishing a book and looking for more so its easier if I can access the web right on the Kindle and search for books rather than waiting to do it on my computer and then transfering them onto the Kindle. As of right now a Kindle is not happening for me because I have my smart phone and downloaded the Kindle app on it. I would love to get the Kindle so I can delete the app on my phone since it is literally killing my memory. I have a ton of books on my app and even putting them in archives they are still on my phone. Id love to get more books but I have to limit the ones I do get because of taking up space I dont have. A Kindle itself would solve my current issue.
