Female cat mean to mother cat.

Hi all!
I have 2 female cats.
Rose 2 years old, and Violet 1+ year old.
They were the best of friends, always cleaning each other or playing together.
Never were they aggressive nor mean to each other.

UNTIL...the younger cat had kittens.
Now Rose will growl and lash out at Violet.
She will not allow Violet near her.

Can someone please tell me what is going on here?
Thank you, and God bless you!

In my personal experience working with female cats with kittens in shelters and veterinarian offices, the behavior you describe is simply the female/mother/queen cat being protective of her kittens. How old are the kittens?

This behavior normally goes away when the kittens are removed or when they "grow up".

Thank you so much for your reply, Cat Person.
It is the opposite. The Queen, mother cat is perfectly fine and sweet natured as usual.
It is the other female cat who is now very mean to the mother cat.
They were inseparable until the mom cat had her kittens.

Sorry, I posted too soon.
The kittens went to their new homes just a couple days ago.
I let Violet (mom cat) go near Rose when the babies left...thinking that was the problem, but she growled and lashed out at her again.

Females who are not spayed tend to be more territorial. Mom or not the cat was defending her babies. Spaying them should greatly help that issue and the overpopulation issue.
