Cat will not eat while in vets care after having a urinary catheterization

Just a little background: My cat is 8 years old and is overweight at 22 pounds. He is an indoor only cat and loves his Chicken Soup brand adult cat dry food.

Last week, I caught my cat eating a thread similar to fishing line and when I picked it up he ran back a bit and wound up pulling the line (about 6 inches) out of his throat/stomach. It did not appear as if he broke the string.

After that point, he would not eat or drink anything for a day. He was lethargic and was not himself. The next day I took him to the vet who did X-rays and found out his bladder was very full and he had a blockage in his urinary tract. This was starting to affect his kidneys. He had stones blocking his urinary tract. The vet did a urinary catheterization and put my cat on medication that would prevent more stones.

He also noticed the cats small intestines were empty so he has kept him this past week checking x-rays to see if there is blockage or movement in his intestines. The next few days proved to be good as things were moving in the intestines but my cat has not had a bowel movement. He has urinated however. So the vet is keeping him for now.

My cat has not eaten in a week but they are feeding him Rebound (a nutritional supplement like pediolite for children). The vet is unable to get my cat to eat anything. He said my cat looks fine and is active and if you did not know the history, you would think he is perfectly fine. The vet has tried to avoid exploratory surgery for now but may have to open him up to see what is going on. The X-rays have not shown anything.

If my cat seems healthy and is urinating for the most part, (however, he did not urinate for a day and had to have another catherization) what could be wrong? Has anyone else had a cat in this situation? I have been combing the net looking for some ideas and I saw scary things such as CRF, pancreatic cancer, and fatty liver disease but all those posts seemed to have cats that were losing weight and ill.

I would ask the vet if it's okay for you to come visit and bring some plain meat baby food as well as his regular food to see if he'll eat for you. You could also ask if they've tried feeding him Science Diet a/d. That stuff is like kitty crack.

Make SURE they force feed him or place a feeding tube on him FAST - your cat is over weight and he can develop fatty liver disease very very quickly if he doesn't eat properly - and that can be fatal too.
Pay vary close attention to that. It does happen and it happens fast. If your vet says to not worry - DO NOT LISTEN. DEMAND.

If they are feeding him rebound regularly, he should be ok and your vet may have a reason for putting him on a liquid diet. Normally, at the clinic.where.I work anyway, we.would syringe feed hills' a/d which is high in protein and fat.and used for recovery and enticing cats and dogs to eat. But maybe your vet is concerned about his intestines and a liquid.diet. would be easier for your baby to digest. I am only guessing. We do use rebound for animals who have digestive issues or are in dire.straits. it sounds like your cat is in bad shape sorry to say. I'm wondering if a barium x-ray would be in order. That way, they could see how the barium moves through his digestive system. I wouldn't wait too long though. I would keep in close contact with your vet. Are they giving him meds like sulcrafate? It would help protect his.tummy. keep us posted....we're rooting for your baby!

Well good news! My cat, Toby, is doing well today. He had a bowel movement and is eating. I should be able to take him home tomorrow. The vet has had me call everyday this week 3 times a day for updates so staying in contact with them was not a problem. I appreciate the support!
