Is there a cat repellent?

One of my cats persists in defecating in one area of a carpet. Is there a repellent I could get to discourage her?

There are lots of products that advertise themselves as such, usually containing citronella oil, but I have never found one that works. I did manage to repel a cat from a plant pot by using pieces of grapefruit peel, but that would not work on a carpet. The best thing to do is to clean the carpet with a good ezymatic cleaner made for the purpose, such as Nature's Miracle or Simple Solution. Anything else will still smell to the cat, even though you think it is clean. If it is possible to remove the carpet for a while too, it helps to get her to forget about that place.

Sorry to say this but what I know of cats is that they hate defecating in any open area unless they have no choice. Either the cat is ill some way, or there is not enough litter boxes, or the carpet reeks with some smell that attracts the cat to use it. Or the feces got stuck on the cat's rear and fell off on the carpet.

You could put a plastic carpet runner, with the little plastic spiky side up, on the carpet.

Use some enzymatic cleaner. Soak the carpet and let it sit for a while, then dry it thoroughly. You want to get rid of the cat smell ASAP.

Check the cat's litter box. Is it clean and in a convenient location where the cat can't be surprised? Is it in a high-traffic area where the cat might not want to do its business? Does the cat have more than one litter box? Some cats like having an alternate location--they want to pee in one and poop in the other. Two boxes is generally a good idea anyway.
