I've noticed since the weekend (so almost a week) that Genever's had an itchy right ear. She'd scratch at it a lot, and shake her head a whole lot too. I checked it out a few days ago and couldn't see any gunk in there or any redness or anything. This morning there was a ton of scratched off fur on the sofa! I know it wasn't from a fight because it was just grey fur, no orange fur, and just on one area of the sofa. So I checked her ear again, and there's a bald spot behind her hear and it's red, from scratching, and inside her ear looks scratched open now. A bit of reddish crusty stuff and a bit of ooze (don't know what else to call it
) in the folds near the outside of her ear. I don't know how else to describe that part of the ear..

Should I wet a Q-Tip and try to clean it, and put some Neosporin on it? Do I need to call the vet about it? I hate that she's itchy, and now probably sore too.

When Angel was scratching her ear the vet said she had ear mites. Gave us some meds for the ear and eventually the really bad scratching stopped.

IMO the head shaking is cause for a vet visit. I once had a cat, poor guy, who used to have recurring yeast in his ears, and I knew it was time for more meds when I would see him shake his head. The other possibility I'm familiar with is the one already mentioned, mites.

I hope your ear stops bothering you soon, Genever!

This could be an ear infection too, yes a vet visit is in order. The scratching can be a sign of ear ache not necessarily itchiness, the same for head shaking. Get well soon Genever!

Oh dear, I guess Genever has to get meowmy's mind off Dorothy's upcoming surgery and wants some of the attention.......
. I would take her in. The vet will be able to tell you right away what the issue is.

If her ears are not slightly cool to the touch, it's probably some sort of infection or irritation (mites, yeast). Otherwise it could be the start of allergies.
A vet visit is definitely in order.

I did call the vet yesterday afternoon, and we agreed Genever should get checked out. So we have an appointment tomorrow (Sat.) morning. She's not scratching it or shaking her head much at all today, but it still looks pretty sore with a small bit of crust and oozing stuff like what I found yesterday. Hopefully it's nothing too bad!!

Definitely warrants a vet visit. Please let us know what they say tomorrow.

Thanks for all the well wishes!

We're back home, with a week's worth of clavamox. It wasn't an ear infection, but rather looked like some sort of 'trauma' near the outside of the ear that got infected. Either she got bitten by a bug, or got scratched by Dorothy, or even scratched herself open, and kept scratching at it because it was irritated, and so it got infected. Blah. She was a little bad though- she nipped at the vet when she was feeling her belly! She NEVER bit or scratched or fought the vet ever! I guess she was just not in the mood to have her Saturday morning of laziness interrupted by a trip to the vet.

So that's that, now we have to gear up for Dorothy's 'surgery' on Monday.
