chin acne & omega 3 for flakes?

Hi all.

Just returned from the vet, to take our kittie in for a rash under her chin. looks red & inflamed, scabbed areas & looks like she's been scratching, as there is no hair. However, we've never seen her itching her chin. The vet said it was chin acne, which can be fairly common and is sometimes a reaction to food or food bowls. I don't think that's the case, as nothing has changed related to, well anything with her care. So, he's pretty sure it's just acne, straightforward and said to either use stridex pads or wash daily with gentle soap & water.

Also, for her dandruff/flakes (which she has always had especially towards her backend) he said that Omega-3 capsules help. Said we could just use the human capsules, dumping the contents of one in with her food daily, and she will consume it.

Has anybody ever heard of either or these remedies, or used either of them with or without any degree of success? Just curious...

thanks :-)

The best remedy we've seen for the acne was switching to stainless steel food and water bowls and keeping them very clean. Ceramic works, too, but again, you have to keep it very clean. Don't use plastic, wood, etc.

Don't have any experience with the Omega-3 stuff.

Ceramic does not work as well, it developes tiny hairline cracks (crazing) in the glaze which harbors bacteria, same as plastic.
I use stainless or glass (pyrex) dishes.

For dandruff a good diet high in fats (natural omega sources) and protein will reduce if not eliminate it, although if cat is doing well on current diet, yes, an omega supplement will help.
I prefer though to use cod liver oil or vitamin E oil to add omega 3 fatty acids.
Daily combing will also help spread the coat's natural oils and reduce it.

Also, if your cat is indoors it can sometimes dry out their skin (much like ours).
The addition of cool mist humidifiers or an aquarium or two can help add humidity to the home and will aid in the reduction of dandruff.

I have been dealing with chin acne on three of my cats. Two are pretty much over it and Pipsqueak seems to need to have his chin cleaned daily and is still on antibiotics.

I would not use Stridex pads, way to drying and irritating. Use Hibiclens (recommended by Carolina here on TCS) you can buy it at Walgreens. I switched to that from Benzoil Peroxide and it works great. Use it daily. If you cat's chin is deeply infected, large pustules, she would the addition of antibiotics. There is also a topical ointment called Mupirocin. I also use that for Pipsqueak. His chin is getting better, but very slowly.

I also switched to stainless steel bowls from ceramic. Good luck with your kitty.
