I came into the office today (I normally work from home) and when Dana and I were in the elevator, Dana's manager comes in as well. She has 3 cats of her own. She starts saying how her brother, who owns a farm, has barn cats and she'll probably be taking 2 of his kittens because they are part siamese with beautiful markings.

Anyway, I didn't say anything, just went to my desk and got to work. Dana comes over a few minutes later, obviously mad. I guess they continued the conversation and Dana asked her why he doesn't TNR them. She said he doesn't want to pay for it, so Dana told her he should contact a TNR organization here in the area and he would give her the information so that these cats could be fixed and stop adding to the overpopulation problem.

Do you know what she says?!?! "Oh they're not really contributing to the problem, because where they're so beautiful, people would take these cats over "regular" cats!"
He just had to walk away.

Sometimes I'm surprised I haven't gone completely postal on someone yet...

Ugh. I'll take my "regular" cat any day of the week, thank you very much. It's these kind of people that see cats as accessories and not as companions with individual personalities. So very sad...

I can certainly empathize with you on this one.

Because we are both unemployed,DH and I are living in his parents' house.
They had three cats and a dog when we moved in.
One cat is neutered, the other cats one male, one female are not.
The dog is not.

They let the female out, she of course got pregnant (though I suspect the father of her kittens is her own son, their un-neutered male).
She had 4 kittens, 2 male, 2 female.

They are hoarders, the house isn't safe for pets or kids.
One of the female kittens was poisoned by something, had to be put down.
They can't afford to feed the pets they have.
Two weeks into the month and they are feeding their pets mashed potatoes and red wheat. I sneak canned food to them because I know the cats can't possibly live on this.

They bring an unspayed female chi home to breed with their male, to 'make money' neither dog is papered.
They decided to keep one of the kittens, a male.

So they now have 4 cats, 1 neutered male, 2 un-neutered males and an unspayed female.
Two dogs, neither fixed.
They gripe because the dogs potty in the house, well, they only get let out once a day unless we do it, no wonder they go in the house.

They can't be talked to as it always goes in one ear and out the other.
They mostly ignore the male chi, he's more my dog now than theirs.
We have vowed that once we are able to get out of here, the male chi and the male black cat are coming with us, regardless of their feelings.
At which point, DH plans on calling social services on them as it's obvious they need professional help.

We keep our pets in our bedroom, sad as that is, because of their apathy towards not only their pets, but their living situation as well.

It's really, really tough for me to keep my mouth shut and not blow up at them, so I stay sequestered in our bedroom.

I know a woman who doesn't hesitate to spend over $100.00 on a handbag, but won't have the cats at her house spayed or neutered because it "costs too much." It's sad to know that there are people out there like her and your co-worker.
