Blood in Urine

I have multiple cats.

I found blood in cat urine on my Family Room rug.

I've seen 3 "pee areas" that when blotted the paper towel is dark pink / red. Two of these areas are on the 1st floor & 1 area is on the 2nd floor.

There are several cats they never go upstairs so they are eliminated.

I've also eliminated 2 others because I saw them use the litter box & then blotted the wet litter & it was not pink/red.

I put 2 cats in dog crates last night. I cut up pieces of white paper (instead of litter) so I could see if the pee was normal color or pink.

As of today @ 10:30 am they have not pee'd.

If there are lots of little spots around, someone definitely has a UTI, and likely a blockage. Sounds like you're working hard at the detective job.

Actually they are large spots.

I have had a male cat get blocked before but he is on Purina U/R food. I know he has pee'd recently because I feed him in a dog crate & he doesn't come out of the crate until I see pee.

But I have never dealt with blood in urine.

I have 6 1-yr olds from a litter last summer. The mother was FIV+ so we kept the kittens so we could get them tested for FIV & we are attached to them now.

I have a cat with blood in urine and it has been diagnosed as Feline Idiopathic cycstitis, meaning no known cause. This was after extensive tests being performed, he never had crystals, stones or even a bacterial infection. For Pip, it is stress related. If a cat is stressed it affects the bladder wall which gets irritated and then you have blood.

It sounds like you are doing everything right to try to find out which cat it is. Then you can start the process with your vet to figure out why there is blood. Most likely it is an UTI or a crystal issue which can be helped with a prescription diet.

p.s. I am so sorry to hear about your Cruiser.

Thank you for your kind words....Cruiser lived to be 12 & we adopted him from a shelter when he was about 7 months old. He is missed so much.....he was my son's favorite cat & my son is trying to deal with the loss.

Any problem with our pets & it's upsetting. But dealing with the loss of Cruiser makes it all the harder.

I will be trying all day to gather urine samples. Vet closes at 6:00 today.

Oh no! Sounds like you're on track to figure out who it is. it won't be long before you know, and it's an easily treatable infection.

I need to get a urine sample from each cat that goes up to the 2nd floor of our house. Because.....1 day ago we noticed a small area in my son's closet that was cat pee & the color was dark pink. Several of our cats do not go up to the 2nd floor. So I'm trying to get urine samples.....it took almost 18 hours to get 1 sample from 1 cat.

The 1 sample that I got yesterday I took to the vet in the late afternoon. Urine was OK.

I'm wondering the following........if I see one of the cats using the litter (cat that I need to get a urine sample from)......couldn't I just use a clean plastic throw-away spoon, scoop some of the wet litter, put it on a paper plate & then proceed to add drops of water to the wet litter. If no pink or red color comes out then this particular cat does not have an infection?

Have you tried smelling the pee biscuits? Usually bacteria loaded urine has a specific smell to it. Our RB Heidi Ann battled a UTI for months and her pee stank to high heaven.

The other thing you could try if your kitties would allow it is to stimulate them to pee. This is a two people operation. One person holds the kitty and gently wipes the butt with a warm wet towel while the other person holds a sample cup and is ready to collect the urine. I know it sounds crazy but believe me we have done it and it works. The trick is to keep the kitty calm.

The additional issue is that I do not see any more pink/red stains on the beige carpet or any other place in our house. My daughter & I checked every room.

Every cat is acting normal, not hiding, etc.

Unfortunately, you often can't see blood in the pee even when it's there. That you can see it means there was/is a VERY bad infection.

At this point, if you've been able to narrow it down at all, you may want to try LoveWhisker's suggestion for the suspect cats and take all the pee samples to the vet. I don't remember how many cats you have, and I don't know how many are on the "suspect" list. But if it's only 2 or 3, you may want to talk to the vet about bringing them all in, and having them express their bladders to get the urine samples. Maybe they wouldn't charge you a "vet visit" for each one, and just take them as a group and only charge for the individual urinalyses? It's worth asking.

Sorry, just for clarification, is it FIV or FeLV? In another thread you mentioned it was FeLV. I ask, only because if it's FIV, they don't really need to be separated. But didn't mean to detract from this thread.

I can rule out 3 of my older cats because they never venture up to the 2nd floor of our home (in a previous message I mentioned that there was pink-red colored pee in my son's bedroom which is located on the 2nd floor).

The "kittens" all seem to be fine, no urinating out of the litter boxes, no sign of blood, they are active, seem relaxed & content .....

At this point, since there is nothing to indicate a problem, I don't know how to narrow it down to which "kitten" could have had the bloody urine.

I've eliminated 3 of the adult cats because they never go up to the 2nd floor (a red pee stain was in my son's closet).

If it were me, I would start by taking the remaining potential adult cats in to the vet to have their bladders expressed. It could be the kitties, but the higher probability is that it's an older cat.

And if the momma cat has FIV, not FeLV, she doesn't need to be kept separate unless she's unusually aggressive. FIV cannot be transmitted casually. FeLV can, but not FIV. Happy to provide links if you're interested, but you the picture in my signature is a link, and a good starting place.

Is it possible the FIV kitty could be having a problem or infection? Recurring urinary infections is just one of the possible problems of a kitty with FIV.. Might be helpful to click on LDG's siggy and see I'd that is a possibility . also, since you did see bloody urine on the carpets, then if you did bring in some of the cats you suspect to the vet to have their bladder's expressed, the blood will most likely still be in the urine and you can either rule out those cats or better yet, you will find out who it is.

With my cat, Pip, I did not visibly see any blood in the urine, he was just going to the litterbox too often and was not expressing a normal amount of urine. I also know of someone who set up a camera to monitor the boxes while they were at work. That way they found out right away who was sick because it was caught on the video which cat was going in and out of the box all day.

I would think if you are seeing blood there is a serious infection going on with one of your cats. I sure hope you can narrow it down soon and get that cat to the vet. Best of luck

I checked everywhere in the house yesterday (except the basement but the basement door is kept shut at all times). There are no new pee spots.

I also was in the laundry room (where the litter boxes are) & saw 2 of the "kittens" use the litter box. I took a small spoonful of wet litter from where each cat "went" & put it on a styrofoam plate. Then I poured a tiny bit of water on the litter.......there was no pink or red coloring in the water that ran off the litter. I know that's not proof that there is a possible infection.

I have 4 adult cats. One chooses to stay in the basement because she is very timid. So that leaves 3 adult cats to consider. One female has a leg that was broken & then mended (when she was a stray in our development) & she never goes upstairs (where bloody pee was on the rug inside a closet). So I don't think I need to take her to the vet.

As mentioned in an earlier message I tried keeping a male kitten in a crate with a litter box lined with shredded newspaper & after 12 hours I was concerned he'd have a problem if he needed to go but was holding it. So I let him out of the crate.

I'll have to call the vet & see about getting the other 2 adults' bladders expressed.

The kitty that has FIV is in a huge dog crate. She is semi-feral. She is not the one peeing pink/red pee.

And.......in the last 2 or 3 days, no cat has been leaving behind pink/red pee.

I took 2 urine samples to the vet yesterday. They were from my 2 older male cats. One sample came up with an infection.

The vet prescribed an antibiotic.....Baytril.

I would not have thought this particular cat had a urinary infection. His behavior was perfectly normal.

Thanks for the suggestion to start with the older cats.
